Henry Cavill in the ‘Twilight’ movies? See the franchise that almost was

The man of steel could’ve been the man of sparkles? This is news every Twihard fan must hear before 2020 ends. Stephanie Meyer has revealed that Henry Cavill should’ve been cast as the gray and brooding Edward Cullen. Yes, the role that now famously belongs to one Robert Pattinson.

What could’ve become of the Twilight movies? Hold on tight spidermonkey, as we dive in.

Die-hard Twihards

It’s nearing the end of 2020 and this year has been filled with nostalgia. Rewatching each Twilight movie has become a weekly occurrence. Don’t judge us. Seeing cringey romantic glances and awkward dialogue fuels a hunk, a hunk of burning love we have for the franchise and reminds us of an easier time.

Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart played our beloved Edward Cullen & Bella Swan over the course of five movies. These movies were based on a book series written by YA author Stephanie Meyer. Twilight became a spoof of itself, but also a guilty pleasure we can’t help returning to.

The story follows Bella Swan as she moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest called Forks. She falls in love with Edward Cullen, a mysterious classmate who reveals himself to be a 108-year-old vampire. Yikes. Even reading the plot is enough to make us run in the other direction. We get to see Bella grow and eventually take her place amongst the Cullen vampire clan. It’s an immortal love story.

Sometimes, when a book is made into a film, the author and studio can have a difference of opinions – looks like the latest news comes straight from the author’s mouth. It turns out that Pattinson & Stewart weren’t Meyer’s first casting choice for the star crossed lovers.

Superman is a vampire?

Henry Cavill, known for his more recent roles in the DC universe as Superman, would’ve been cast for the role of Edward Cullen. The man flying around in tights could’ve been flying around with a clingy Bella Swan on his back. What a sight!

Buzzfeed unearthed an old post from Twilight author Stephanie Meyer detailing who she envisioned for the cast of the franchise. “My opinions on the movie matter to no one. I have no influence on what goes on with the movie at all. No one is going to ask who I think should star in Twilight,” said Meyer as she began her letter to the internet.

“Indisputably the most difficult character to cast, Edward is also the one that I’m most passionately decided upon,” Meyer wrote at the time. “The only actor I’ve ever seen who I think could come close to pulling off Edward Cullen is. . . . (drumroll). . . . Henry Cavill.” Looks like Stephanie Meyer stans Henry Cavill and we can’t say we blame her.

This revelation comes after an interview following the announcement of Edward Cullen’s initial casting. “I am ecstatic with Summit’s choice for Edward. There are very few actors who can look both dangerous and beautiful at the same time, and even fewer who I can picture in my head as Edward. Robert Pattinson is going to be amazing.”

Bella Swan was always going to have a different face behind the role. (Cue the awkward facial expressions from Kristen Stewart stans.) Meyer was more open for the role of Miss Swan. She had multiple choices including Danielle Panabaker and Emily Browning.

As a note to the production company, Meyer expressed one request for Bella: “I will throw myself off a tall building if they cast some lip-syncing, popstar-slash-actress in the role. Just FYI.” Luckily for her, they cast awkward actress Stewart and without her some iconic acting would’ve never graced our screens.
