Renewed or retired: Will Tom Holland continue as Spider-Man?
Tom Holland has, as usual, done a stellar performance in the newest Disney movie. The British actor took on the role of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first appearing in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. From there, he starred in his own films in the MCU, and now Spider-Man: No Way Home is his latest acting credit.
But will Tom Holland continue his iconic role as Spider-Man? Where’s his acting career heading from here? Let’s break down the young actor’s successful journey so far, and see where he’s going next.
Tom Holland’s beginnings
After attending college, studying acting & dancing along the way, Holland got his big break when Lynne Page, a choreographer, saw him at the 2006 Richmond Dance Festival. Page knew Peter Darling, and both had done work for Billy Elliot the Musical. This eventually led to Holland having a part in Billy Elliot the Musical in 2008.
From there, Holland took on various dance roles and slowly began getting more parts in various movies, from acting jobs to voiceover work. But then, everything suddenly changed. Because then, Tom Holland became Spider-Man.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man role
In 2015, the big break came: Tom Holland was cast as Spider-Man. And he didn’t just get a short film part – in the casting agreement, he signed up for six movies with Marvel. As stated previously, this began in Captain America: Civil War, and continued onward to great places, with successful movie after successful movie.
2017 brought his starring role in the MCU: Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming. For this film, he was highly praised, and his appearance in the next year’s Avengers: Infinity War only gave him more fans. Avengers: Endgame & Spider-Man: Far From Home surprised and delighted viewers, and Holland only got more popular with these releases.
And now, Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man appearance has come with Spider-Man: No Way Home. This latest flick features him on an interdimensional adventure with Doctor Strange, in a movie that’s billed as the most exciting story in the MCU yet. But now that Holland has appeared in so many movies for this Disney franchise, what will happen for him next.
Will Tom Holland keep being Spider-Man?
When Tom Holland signed up to be Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as we discussed, he agreed to appear in six movies. Let’s break down the specifics of what that contract was, and see what it means for the future.
The agreement specifically stated that Holland would have three movies with him leading the cast, and then three MCU appearances. And now, that has happened: he’s led in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home; he has appeared in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
So it looks like the deal is off now . . . and what does this mean for the future? Well, Holland has branched out into other roles, such as starring in the new Uncharted movie. But though a new agreement has yet to be made, many want Holland to continue playing Spider-Man, from co-stars to workers behind-the-scenes.
And in addition to this, Holland has reassured fans that even if his contract runs out, “if they want me back, I’ll be there in a heartbeat.” So he’s not going to give up the part of Spider-Man so easily.
