Grab some popcorn: The streaming movies coming out in 2021
With movie theatres closed across the globe due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people are turning to watching movies on streaming services more & more. Some platforms, such as HBO Max, are even releasing their upcoming slate of movies for 2021 alongside theatre releases in places where theatres are opened. This allows people to prioritize their health while also getting new content.
While a lot of films have already been released, more movies are still coming out in 2021. Which ones should you be excited about? Who movies coming out in 2021 do you need to see? Here are a couple that we cannot wait to witness with our own eyeballs while safely at home.
Red Notice (Netflix)
A movie with Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson? That’s a movie with charisma & charm to burn. (Seriously, we’ve been wanting a movie with Reynolds & Johnson together for years.) Netflix’s Red Notice has kept details under wraps, but what we do know is that it follows an Interpol agent (Johnson) as he tracks down two brilliant criminals (Gadot, Reynolds).
We’re super stoked because the concept of the movie sounds solid and the cast is the main draw. Even if Red Notice is lackluster in the plot department, this moving coming out in 2021 has a serious charm offensive with this cast. Sometimes, all you need to cover up some film sins is a great cast to smooth over the rougher edges.
Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney+)
Disney’s next big animated feature looks so, so cool. The film is set in the world of Kumandra where Raya (Kelly Marie Tran) sets off on an adventure to find the last dragon, Sisu (Awkwafina), in order to stop the monsters known as the Druun from taking over the world. They’re joined by a colorful cast of characters: a con artist toddler (Thalia Tran), a 10-year-old entrepreneur (Izaac Wang), and a giant (Benedict Wong).
Raya and the Last Dragon was completed during the COVID-19 quarantine by the animators of Disney. It also goes into mythology and cultures of Southeast Asia. Plus, of course, Raya and the Last Dragon’s art is so pretty and the fight scenes look amazing. What’s not to love? Premium members of Disney+ can streaming on March 5, 2021.
The Suicide Squad (HBO Max)
Technically, this film is a “soft reboot” of the 2016 David Ayer-directed affair. We guess this means that some of the same cast will be involved and we’re just ignoring everything else that happened in that film. Either way, since the marketing for 2016’s Suicide Squad was trying to give Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, then it’s a good thing we have James Gunn directing The Suicide Squad.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for this movie coming out in August 2021. What we do know, however, is that the cast, which includes Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Peter Capaldi, Sylvester Stallone, and Viola Davis is amazing. Hopefully, the movie will be a good blend of action and comedy. The Sucide Squad is available for streaming on August 6 on HBO Max.
In the Heights (HBO Max)
Do you love musicals? Do you love Lin-Manuel Miranda? Good news, In the Heights is the first musical that he ever wrote and got on Broadway. The music? Stunning. The cast? Great. Our money? Gone to HBO Max to check this adaptation out. For those Broadway fans dying to see a musical in any way, shape, or form? In the Heights is the perfect way to get that craving satisfied.
In the Heights is directed by Jon M Chu with a cast led by Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, and Melissa Barrera. This movie is coming to HBO Max on June 18, 2021. Perfect timing because this is a summer sort of musical.
