Types of touchscreens


A capacitive touchscreen panel is covered with an electrical charge-storing substance. 


When the display panel is touched, a small amount of charge is transferred to the point of contact. Circuits in each corner of the panel measure the charge and transmit it to the controller for processing. 

Capacitive touch screens must be touched with a finger instead of resistive and surface wave panels (which accept a finger or a stylus).


Infrared touch screens employ a matrix of infrared beams emitted by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with phototransistor receiving ends. 

The infrared beam is obstructed when a finger or tool is used near the display. This interruption gives the device information about the location of the finger or instrument.


When someone touches a resistive touchscreen panel, a thin metallic electrically conductive and resistive layer changes the electrical current. It is detected as a touch event and delivered to the controller for processing. 

Resistive touchscreen panels are often less expensive. However, they only provide 75% clarity. Moreover, sharp objects can harm the touchscreen layer.

Surface acoustic wave

Ultrasonic waves that travel across the touchscreen display are used in surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology.


A part of the wave is absorbed when the panel is contacted. The ultrasonic wave change detects the position of the touch event and transmits it to the controller for processing. 

Surface acoustic wave touch screens are the most sophisticated of the three, but outside elements can harm them.
