Will ‘Sex/Life’ get a season 3 – or cancelled (for creepy reasons)?

Some of our favorite series end up after a couple of seasons and Sex/Life will not be the exception.  Sometimes these cancellations come from a low or insufficient budget to keep producing it, but it looks like something else happened regarding Sex/Life. Especially since this Netflix series debuted in June 2021 and quickly became a sensation. Let’s take a closer look before saying goodbye!

The show is based on the novel 44 Chapters About 4 Men by B.B. Easton, which follows the story of Billie Connelly (played by Sarah Shahi), a suburban wife & mother who begins to feel restless in her seemingly perfect life. Sarah Shahi is not only the main star of the show but the reason behind its cancellation. Apparently, the actress got very frank about her feelings about the series’s season two.

In these revelations, the actress shared to have been bothered by some changes made after the show’s first installment. The show is known for its steamy sex scenes, which have drawn both praise and criticism from viewers which can be another situation to consider. Some have hailed the show for its frank portrayal of female sexuality, while others have criticized it for being overly gratuitous.

Steamy scenes & topics

Regardless of one’s opinion on sexual content, there’s no denying that it plays a central role in the show’s plot and character development. It doesn’t take a lot to realize that these series include an important amount of sexual content just by reading the title. Yet, is there a current TV show without tons of steamy scenes? Aside from enjoying them, these shows tend to take the stigma out of sex.

One of the most interesting aspects of Sex/Life is the way it explores themes of motherhood and domesticity. Billie struggles to reconcile her desire for excitement and adventure with her responsibilities as a mother and wife. She begins to question whether the life she’s built for herself is truly fulfilling and whether she’s lost touch with the passionate, impulsive person she used to be.

It’s important to get in touch with these kinds of real content that present the complexity of certain experiences like being a mother. For this reason, the show also delves into issues of identity and self-discovery. Billie’s former flame, Brad Simon (played by Adam Demos), represents a version of herself that she left behind when she settled down and had children.

As she begins to reconnect with him, she’s forced to confront the choices she’s made and the person she’s become. Overall, Sex/Life is a provocative and thought-provoking series that challenges viewers to think critically about issues of sexuality, identity, and motherhood. For the presence of these topics, we can agree that the show it’s not for everyone.

Reasons behind cancelation

According to various news sources, there has been no official reason given for the show’s cancellation. Some speculate that it may have been due to budgetary constraints, low ratings, or creative differences between the show’s producers and the network. It is also possible that the cancellation was a result of a combination of factors.

Ultimately, the specific reasons behind the show’s cancellation remain unknown unless official statements are released. Yet, the second part of this version relates the show’s cancellation to Sarah Shahi’s testimony after working for the first seasons.  “I’m never going to work for Netflix again now after saying all this, but I can’t lie.”

It’s a fact that there will not be a Sex/Life season 3, nonetheless,  there are two great seasons still available. Those who are willing to dive into the show’s complex themes and characters will find it to be a rewarding viewing experience.
