Is ‘Scream 5’ a go? Here’s everything you need to know
Scream is one of those movies that perfectly balances humor and horror, showing that the line between the two is not as big as you’d think. Or, at least, the original 1996 movie starring Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox does and its sequel. Whether or not you’re a fan of everything else that the franchise spawned is up to you, but Scream is considered to be one of the best horror franchises of all time. One thing fans agree on, however, is that Scream 4 wasn’t . . . awesome.
Now it looks like we’re going to get more Scream. A new movie based on the popular franchise is currently in development. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming feature film.
Scream 5 has been in development since 2019
Bloody Disgusting first reported rumblings of an upcoming Scream film in 2019. According to the horror website, Spyglass Entertainment has been in development since Nov. 2019. It looks like that planning a new Scream film has been in the works for a bit of time.
It makes sense. At the time, Nov. 2019, Scream burned off the episodes for its third and final season on Vh1. The third season wasn’t great, but the first two seasons definitely deserve a recommendation.
Scream 5 already has directors
This new Scream film has already netted its directors in the form of Ready or Not duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet. If you’re wondering what Ready or Not is, think hide and seek, but make it scary. It’s a smart choice. Ready or Not definitely took some cues from the original Scream franchise, being out there, bloody, and having a strong message at the center of the story.
Maybe they can get Samara Weaving for the Scream film! She was brilliant in Ready or Not.

In addition to finding directors, Scream 5 has also found its writer in Kevin Williamson. The name should sound familiar to Scream fans. Williamson penned the original 1996 film along with the subsequent sequels (yes even Scream 3 and Scream 4). Hopefully, he’ll produce a script that’s more on par with the efforts of the best that Scream had to offer.
Other projects that Williamson has been involved with are Tell Me A Story, The Vampire Diaries, Dawson’s Creek, and the Scream television series.
When can we expect Scream 5?
According to IndieWire, production for the upcoming Scream film is set to start in May. This was before the coronavirus ensnared the world in its grasp. So it’s hard to say if the film will still hold that May production start date. If it does, then we’re expecting a 2021 release.
If not? Well, it could still be a 2021 release, just later in the year, or sometime in 2022.
