'Boys Over Flowers' made us all fall in love with Kim Bun. Here's what to know about his exciting new series.

Kim Bum from ‘Boys Over Flowers’ has a new K-drama: What to know

Boys Over Flowers was an incredibly popular K-drama. The show is, however, over ten years old now. This means that occasionally rewatching just doesn’t have the same glory anymore and fans want to see new content with the actors they fell in love with. Fans who fell in love with Kim Bum have had a rough go of it though, since he hasn’t been in the acting scene for about four years now.

However, this is all changing with the new K-drama Tale of the Nine-Tailed (originally titled Gumihodyeon in Korean). The Boys Over Flowers star is in every episode of the new series and it looks like the kind of show you don’t want to miss. Here’s what you need to know.

About the show

Tale of the Nine Tailed is an urban fantasy K-drama utilizing the old Korean legend about a cryptid called a gumiho. Gumihos are somewhat like werewolves, except these creatures can transform between human form and the form of a fox. Gumihos in human form are often supernaturally so attractive they’re hard to resist. They can also live for a thousand years. In human form they can love humans . . . or they can eat them.

The show follows the character Lee Yeon (Dong-Wook Lee) who is one of the few “good” gumihos – he works to keep the others in check. If he finds out others are becoming too destructive or are risking exposing their existence then Yeon kills them. Lee Yeon is also waiting for his true love (who is human) to be reincarnated.

His true love this time around is named Ji-ah (Jo Bo-ah) and she’s a writer who investigates the supernatural. One of the show’s trailers is a short scene between the two as Ji-ah interviews Lee Yeon – the scene is funny but quickly turns steamy toward the end.

Kim Bum’s role

Kim Bum plays Lee Rang, Lee Yeon’s half brother, and he appears in all sixteen episodes of the show. His character appears to be rather mischievous and, well, a little evil since he eats people – but his fans appear not to mind too much.

One even said, “our evil yet cute man” when captioning comparison pictures from both Tale of the Nine-Tailed and Boys Over Flowers. The comparison of the two roles have amused many since he was a sweetie in Boys Over Flowers and is much more edgy in this new K-drama.

Kim Bum’s character is also a gumiho (hence the people-eating), and the first episode features a scene where he transforms from a cute dweeb into a breath-taking & semi-intimidating bad boy with a slick black suit & sunglasses.

When asked about returning to acting, Kim Bum said, “I’m very pleased and nervously excited to be saying hello to you for the first time in a while.” He also described his character this way: “[He] might look evil and sharp from some perspectives. But to me, he looks very lonely.”

How to watch

If you’re interested in watching Tale of the Nine-Tailed you’re in luck. The sixteen episode series only just began on October 7. There are currently three episodes out and the fourth is set to be released tomorrow, October 14.

The episodes are also available to watch on the popular streaming website Viki with subtitle options in twenty-five different languages.

The show currently has an impressive 9/10 stars on IMDb and Google reviews says it has 98% positive reviews, so it seems K-drama fans are absolutely loving this series. We have to say, this seems like this is a series you don’t want to miss – the addition of Kim Bum just makes it all the better.
