Is Jamie Lynn Spears fighting to #FreeBritney in silence?
The saga of the #FreeBritney movement proves to rage on this week. Following her testimony, responses have rolled in from the people in the life of Britney Spears. Spears has endured an allegedly grueling conservatorship for over a decade, and the tea has now been spilled on a widespread scale.
The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears displayed Spears’s harrowing story to audiences not in the know when the special dropped back in February. Now, the #FreeBritney movement is spreading like wildfire, and faces from Britney’s past are coming out of the woodwork to say their pieces. This week, Britney’s sister Jamie Lynn broke her silence.
Jamie Lynn 101
Millennials will remember Jamie Lynn Spears from her time starring in Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101, and various bit parts on the kids network throughout the early 2000s.
Jamie Lynn even regularly appeared on the eighth season of All That back in 2002. However, Jamie Lynn was always primarily known to fans as Britney Spears’s little sister. However, by 2011, the younger Spears was reinventing herself and expanding her repertoire. In 2011, Jamie Lynn Spears moved to Nashville, Tennessee with her daughter Maddie to kick off a career in country music.
Her first single “How Could I Want More” dropped in 2013, and Jamie Lynn saw moderate success as a country-leaning pop singer throughout most of the 2010s.
The young celeb also acted, as well as performed & presented at various award shows during his time. Jamie Lynn & Britney appeared to maintain a steady bond throughout Britney’s conservatorship, so why are we just hearing Jamie Lynn weigh in on the #FreeBritney movement now? Let’s take a look at what she said.
Why now?
E! Online reported yesterday that Jamie Lynn Spears finally spoke out about Britney Spears’s conservatorship, the inspiration for the #FreeBritney movement.
Jamie Lynn’s words came from a series of stories she posted on Instagram on June 28th. As for her silence thus far, Jamie Lynn said she “felt like until [her] sister [was] able to speak for herself and say what she felt she needed to say publicly, that it wasn’t [her] place or it wasn’t the right thing to do”.
Britney’s younger sister went on to say she was comfortable with joining the dialogue of the #FreeBritney movement now because Britney has said what she’s wanted to say and what she needed, following the pop icon’s eye-opening testimony last week. Jamie Lynn went on to tell her followers she has always been a massive supporter of her big sister, even if she doesn’t flaunt her loyalty on social media.
Long before a hashtag
Jamie Lynn is quoted saying “I don’t care if she wants to run off to the rainforest and have a gazillion babies in the middle of nowhere or if she wants to come back and dominate the world the way she has so many times before”.
She went on to say “I have nothing to gain or lose either way. This situation does not affect me either way because I am only her sister who is only concerned about her happiness”.
Furthermore, Jamie Lynn made clear her responses to the #FreeBritney movement, or lack thereof, were completely deliberate.
She told her followers she made “a very conscious choice” to only participate in Britney’s life as a sister & aunt to her nephews. Finalizing her stories (and dunking on haters) Jamie Lynn left the platform saying, she has supported her sister “long before there was a hashtag” and she’ll continue to support her long after – “note that”. Well played, Jamie Lynn – duly noted.
