Wait! Is green boxer Jake Paul actually retiring from the sport? Or could this be a publicity stunt to set up his next big opponent? Let's dive in.

Why is Jake Paul retiring as a boxer after recent fight?

Shortly after Jake Paul’s victory over Tyron Woodley last weekend, the twenty-four-year-old YouTube star had officially announced his retirement from professional boxing after going 4-0 in the last two years. Last Monday, Jake Paul the boxer shocked the world when he revealed that he would be stepping down to focus on other revenue streams . . . but it’s Jake Paul we’re talking about. How much can we really trust what he says?

Yesterday, Paul would take fans through the wringer once again by tweeting “Updated status: I’m coming out of retirement.” We mean, with the money Jake Paul the boxer seems to be pulling in from these fights, why would he ever even consider retiring from the sport of boxing in the first place? Well, perhaps he didn’t, and he’s simply looking to troll his dream competitor . . . but just who could Jake Paul want to fight next?

Of course, our minds immediately go to former UFC champion Connor McGregor, the Irish madman who’s constantly coming in and out of retirement, a move that annoys many fans. Perhaps Paul is once again trolling McGregor into stepping into the ring with him, having famously already done so in 2020 when Paul promised McGregor a large payday to take on the Team 10 leader. But does Paul have what it takes? Let’s see.

Paul vs. Woodley

Last Sunday night in Jake Paul’s home of Cleveland, Ohio, the Team 10 leader took on former UFC champion Tyron Woodley at the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, giving fans just a taste of what Jake Paul might actually look like when going head-to-head against a legit fighter, not boxer. While many will claim that Ben Askren was also a fighter, much like Woodley, let’s be real, Askren showed up way out of shape for that fight.

Of course, prior to Jake Paul’s 2021 fights against both Ben Askren & Tyron Woodley, he had previously faced former NBA Slam Dunk Contest Champion Nate Robinson as well as fellow YouTube star Ali Eson Gib. However, as Jake Paul gets better and better at boxing so does his choice of opponents, and after this latest bout with Tyron Woodley, many are curious if Paul is ready to take on an actual boxer.

Needless to say, boxing fans thought this would finally be the moment where Jake Paul would be knocked flat on his butt, as Woodley famously had Paul on the ropes during multiple hits, including one that we thought might end the fight in a TKO. However, Paul kept on going, surviving all of Woodley’s blows with some punches of his own, which ultimately led Jake Paul to win in the fight in a split decision.

Paul is for real . . . maybe

As mentioned before, there were multiple times through the Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley fight where fans assumed that Woodley was close to knocking out Paul, an event that in typical boxing matches would cause the ref to stop the fight due to a clear mismatch. However, the ref opted to let the fight continue, giving Paul plenty of rest in between rounds that would ultimately and seemingly rejuvenate him onto victory.

The skeptic in us could look at the claims on Twitter related to how much money these Jake Paul fights to bring in, for as his undefeated record continues to grow so does the figure fans have to pay to watch these pay-per-views. While Jake Paul might not be the most popular boxer around these days, he’s certainly one of the most profitable, alongside his older brother Logan Paul who’s only appeared in two professional fights.

The bottom line is this. This was any other amateur boxer besides Jake Paul and we wouldn’t question his choice of opponent. That being said, Jake Paul is an annoying public figure who people are clearly willing to pay enough money to watch lose, and that likely won’t happen if he keeps on finding NBA players in UFC fighters.  Now that we know he’s not retiring, it’s time for Jake Paul to take on a real boxer for his fifth fight.
