Missing ‘Dark Matter’? Hulu’s ‘Utopia Falls’ is your new obsession
Dark Matters may be over and fans may still be in mourning for their beloved sci-fi series. That doesn’t mean that the creator of the cancelled series hasn’t been busy. Joseph Mallozzi has a new sci-fi musical series coming to Hulu, Utopia Falls. If Dark Matters is not going to be magically resurrected, then this is definitely the series to come and get your fix.
Here’s what we know about the cast, the premise, the music and more for Hulu’s Utopia Falls.
What is Utopia Falls about?
Taking place in a not-so-distant future, Utopia Falls follows a group of teens as they try out for an exclusive performing arts school Exemplar in idyllic colony of New Babyl. The twist for this is that the world of Utopia Falls has no past only a future. Without the baggage that comes with the past, then we should all be equal.
Of course, the show wouldn’t be interesting if there wasn’t some sort of strife. Per the show’s synopsis, “When they stumble upon a hidden archive of cultural relics, they are forced to question everything they have been taught, ultimately using the power of music to ignite change and expose the truth.”
So it’s a sci-fi musical dystopia teen drama, basically. That’s a sentence we have never written before so we’re already here for what Utopia Falls is bringing to the table. Utopia Falls will also explore “Afrofuturism, youth activism, and eco-awareness” and is aimed at “culturally diverse and socially and politically minded young audiences.”
What’s the music situation?
Get excited because there’s a ton of music from relevant and talented artists that will be used in Utopia Falls. Music from Kendrick Lamar, Alessia Cara, The Roots, The Notorious B.I.G., Daniel Cesar, Jessie Reyes, and Bill Withers will be used in the series.
In addition, there will be dance styles such as hip-hop, Latin, Indigenous, classical, and others used in the series. Nicki Minaj and Rihanna producer Boi-1da serve music producer for the series with choreographer Tanisha Scott, who worked with Cardi B and Rihanna, serving as performance direction.
Basically, the soundtrack is going to be off the charts amazing with a lot of interesting dance styles being utilized as well.
The cast is full of emerging young talent
If you’re looking for new actors to stan, then might we suggest the amazing cast of talent that Utopia Falls has gathered. The cast list is pretty impressive and we can’t wait to see what these young actors will do in their starring roles.
Before we get into the talent, it should be known that Snopp Dogg will be providing the voice of something called The Archive in the series. Chef, rapper, voice acting talent, we’re here for it, Snopp.
The on-screen talent consists of Robyn Alomar (Riot Girls), Akiel Julien (American Gods), Robbie Graham-Kuntz (Full Out), Phillip Lewitski (Supernatural), Humberly Gonzalez (Orphan Black), Devyn Nekoda (Degrassi: The Next Generation) and Mickeey Nguyen (Make It Pop). Also joining the cast are Kate Drummond (Wynonna Earp), Jeff Teravainen (Dark Matter), Huse Madhavji (Saving Hope) and Dwain Murphy (The Strain).
When will Utopia Falls be released?
Utopia Falls will release its 10-episode first season on Friday, Feb. 14 on Hulu. It will drop all episodes at once, not do a week to week thing. So if you don’t have a Valentine’s Day boo to cuddle up with and want something not romantic to watch, then give Utopia Falls a look-see.
