Post-baby: Is the royal family still upset with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?
The royal family has seemingly grown a little larger this past week after Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle announced the birth of their second child, daughter Lilibet Diana. “Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital,” The couple announced in a joint statement last Sunday.
You would think that during a special time like this Prince Harry & Meghan Markle would make an effort to end their much publicized dispute with the royal family. However, a source and royal expert told Entertainment Tonight that the royal family is still holding a grudge against the couple after their widely covered interview with Oprah Winfrey last March, in which they called out the royal family for certain behaviors.
The insider told ET that while the royal family has tried to make a cordial effort in congratulating the royal couple on their new child, with some members of the family tweeting out their congratulations, the royal family still feels much anger & disappointment toward Meghan Markle & Prince Harry for the statements they made to Oprah. What’s the history behind this feud, and can it be mended? Let’s delve in.
Royal pain
Many royal experts and members of the media have obviously looked at “Megxit” as the first stone tossed by Meghan Markle & Prince Harry, creating a rippling effect that eventually put this royal couple on the bad side of the royal family. But what did Megxit exactly entail?
On January 8th, 2020, Meghan Markle & Prince Harry announced on their Instagram account that they would be removing themselves from their senior duties within the royal family, having only served the role of the Duchess of Sussex for two years. The move, at the time, was described as an opportunity to split their time between both the UK and the U.S. so that they may have a better chance at a normal lifestyle.
It was a decision that caught much of the world off guard, as nobody willingly had walked away from royalty. Most of the blame was put on Markle for breaking up such a timeless tradition, villainizing her and making her out to be a royal pain in the a$$. It was a decision that many didn’t understand, that is, until Markle’s & Harry’s interview with Oprah in the Spring of 2021.
Oprah joins the fight
Last March, Meghan Markle spoke openly with Oprah Winfrey regarding her short-lived experience as a royal, and how she fell into a dark & difficult place that felt suicidal. Markle would later in the interview go on to explain how there were even conversations in the family regarding the unborn child of herself and Prince Harry, specifically regarding the possibility of a darker skin tone and how it could complicate things.
Prince Harry eventually stepped in to join the interview, sitting beside his wife while supporting her throughout her soliloquy, most of which was regarding her treatment at the hands of his own family. It was shocking to say the very least.
It’s pretty clear that both their royal exit as well as their decisions to spill the royal tea with the lending hand of Oprah Winfrey was a major final straw to the royal family, who seem to be fed up with the antics of Meghan Markle & Harry in terms of their need to stay in the limelight while slandering a centuries’ old royal tradition. It’s unclear if this royal feud will ever dissolve, but we hope it does soon, especially for Lilibet’s sake.

Many assumed that this feud between the royal family and Meghan Markle & Prince Harry may have ended during the tragic events of Prince Phillip’s funeral, in which Prince Harry reunited with his father & brother to honor the passing of his grandfather. Meghan Markle even sent a wreath to honor his passing. However, it’s obvious that tensions are still high regarding the royal family’s views of Markle’s outlandish claims.
