Go gaga for Gaga: The most epic moments from ‘House of Gucci”s new trailer
If you’re a Lady Gaga super-fan, you’ve almost certainly been following her star turns in film & TV just as fanatically as her music releases. Though the 35-year-old pop icon made her name in music, she’s also had an illustrious acting career, showing a surprising amount of versatility & star power as she’s climbed the ranks from horror show cameos to Academy Award-winning movies.
If you raved about her blockbuster performance as singer-songwriter Ally in A Star is Born (2018) or swooned over her portrayal of a sexy vampire in American Horror Story: Hotel (2015), you’ll love her in her most magnetic role yet: Patrizia Reggiani, also known by the Italian press as “the Black Widow.” Reggiani is the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, heir to the world-renowned fashion house of Gucci.
In 1995, Reggiani hired a hitman to kill Gucci (played by Adam Driver) after he left her for another woman. Lady Gaga plays the social-climber-turned-felon in House of Gucci, which is due to hit theaters on November 24th, 2021. The trailer just dropped and by the looks of it, the film is already iconic. Let’s take a look at some of the trailer’s most jaw-dropping moments.
Gaga’s Italian accent
Lady Gaga fans will know that her real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta and that she was raised by a proud Italian-American family in New York City. In the House of Gucci trailer, Gaga gets to show off both her Italian roots & her acting chops by adopting Reggiani’s Italian accent.
Its authenticity may be up for debate, but there’s something mesmerizing about hearing an Italian accent in Lady Gaga’s instantly recognizable, throaty voice.
From beginning to end, the House of Gucci trailer pulses with intensity. In the first scene, Lady Gaga emerges from the shadows dressed as the ultimate femme fatale. As she swaggers down an Italian street and removes her sunglasses in slow-motion, Gaga’s voiceover purrs: “It was a name that sounded so sweet, so seductive.” You can almost taste Reggiani’s lust for power, wealth, and social status.
The trailer charts Reggiani’s origin story, from her roots as a conniving status seeker to marital bliss to her hunger for expansion — which ultimately drives a wedge between her & Maurizio Gucci. “Gucci needs new blood,” growls Reggiani. “It’s time to take out the trash.” Maurizio protests: “They’re my family.” Not missing a beat, Reggiani retorts: “So am I.”
A gun goes off — and the trailer cuts to a scene of Reggiani, clad head to toe in ski-wear, calmly stirring a cup of tea. “I don’t consider myself to be a particularly ethical person,” she says, smiling, “but I am fair.” Gaga nails the tension between Reggiani’s desperation and her frosty immorality perfectly, solidifying her performance as one to watch.
You may be familiar with the snapshot of Adam Driver & Lady Gaga in fur and winterwear that launched a thousand memes. It turns out that the fashion in House of Gucci is just as iconic as that initial teaser photo.
Enormous sunglasses! Pounds of jewelry and full-length fur coats! Adam Driver’s adorable tortoiseshell glasses! Jared Leto’s plum-colored suit! (“It’s chic!” he bellows defensively while brandishing a cigarette).
As befits a movie about a fashion house, the cast’s wardrobe is as opulently garish, campy, and over-the-top as the melodramatic lines its characters deliver. We’re in love.
The all-star cast
We may be crazy for Gaga, but the rest of House of Gucci’s cast will leave you feeling starstruck, too. The movie also stars Adam Driver (Marriage Story, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Jared Leto (Suicide Squad, Dallas Buyers Club), Salma Hayek (Frida, From Dusk Till Dawn), Jeremy Irons (Justice League, The Lion King), and Al Pacino (Scarface, The Godfather).
