Will ‘The Flash’ season 8 be this DC show’s last?
The DC Arrowverse is changing, everyone. Going into its eighth season on The CW, The Flash has officially lasted just as long as its parent series, Arrow. Will the eighth season be the last season for the series? Well, if The Flash was ending with season 8, then chances are we would have heard something about it by now. With Supergirl and Black Lightning ending in 2021, we wouldn’t be surprised if the show kept on.
Well, there was a report about Grant Gustin being talked about contracts for seasons 8 and 9 of the long-running (and highest-rated) CW series. So we’re guessing The Flash is staying for quite a while. Good news! Things are getting started for season 8 over on the DC-CW show. Due to COVID, of course, production for The Flash has been weird for season 7.
With season 8 filming taking place with a minimal break between seasons 7 and 8, the first chunk of the season is not going to be the usual fare. In fact, we’re getting a crossover of a sort. Heroes from across the DC TV Arrowverse are coming in to give Barry (Grant Gustin) and the rest of Team Flash a hand with another major crisis. Let’s see what we know so far.
Armageddon!
On Wednesday, Aug. 25, the five-part event of The Flash was announced. And if you’re in need of a crossover, then good news! We got it for you right here. The five-part special event is known as “Armageddon”, which is probably going to be as cheerful as the title sounds. The world is ending. All is lost. We know the drill at this point. Fans are going to see heroes & villains from across the Arrowverse make appearances.
Who are we seeing? According to Deadline, “Javicia Leslie as Batwoman, Brandon Routh as The Atom, Cress Williams as Black Lightning, Chyler Leigh as Sentinel, Kat McNamara as Mia Queen and Osric Chau as Ryan Choi.” In addition to these heroes, Tom Cavanagh returns as Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash and Neal McDonough returns as Damien Darhk.
The synopsis reads: “[A] powerful alien threat arrives on Earth under mysterious circumstances and Barry (Grant Gustin), Iris (Candice Patton) and the rest of Team Flash are pushed to their limits in a desperate battle to save the world. But with time running out, and the fate of humanity at stake, Flash and his companions will also need to enlist the help of some old friends if the forces of good are to prevail.” Heck yeah!
Not “quite” a crossover
Unsurprisingly, the current roster of Legends of Tomorrow and Superman & Lois will be Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Show. We’re sure that Legends will make a meta joke, and Superman & Lois will pretend that they’re not part of the Arrowverse, much to the frustration of those who want to see some acknowledgment from somewhere. Stargirl on another Earth has crossed over more with the DC TV verse at this point.
Not the point. Anyone, the “Armageddon” crossover is not really a crossover. Crossover-lite, if you will. At least that’s what CEO & president of The CW Mark Pedowitz said, “It will not quite be a crossover but will have a crossover-type feel and the introduction of all these characters.” So make of that what you will because it sounds like a crossover to us.
The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace said, “[W]e’re doing them on a scale that’s bigger and bolder than our traditional Flash episodes. So yes, “Armageddon” is a lot more than just another graphic novel storyline. It’s going to be a true event for Flash and Arrowverse fans, old and new. Honestly, I can’t wait for audiences to see what we’ve got planned.” Sounds epic. Can’t wait to see it.
