Fans Angry Over Billie Eilish Vogue Photoshoot

If you’ve been watching the news in the last couple of days, then you know that 19-year old singer, Billie Eilish graced the latest cover of British Vogue dressed in vintage-inspired lingerie, which is a completely different look from her regular style. The Billie Eilish Vogue photoshoot left many fans angry,  which opened up a conversation about the sexualization of women’s bodies in pop culture. 

Someone unfamiliar with the singer Billie Eilish might think that all this fuss is because this is her first cover on Vogue. But that’s not the case. The worldwide famous singer has been on the cover of Vogue three times, but this particular cover sparked a lot of controversy in the public’s eyes. And why is that?

She showed some skin. The 19-year old singer became popular due to the enormous talent and gift she possesses, but she was also known for her signature style, which is:

1. Baggy clothes
2. Little to no makeup 
3. Crazy dyed hair

Last year, Billie Eilish explained the reason behind her unique style. She said that she wears big clothes to avoid being sexualized. Keep in mind that this singer gained a lot of popularity when she was only 14. 

With her British Vogue cover, she made a departure from her past image. Not long ago, the singer dyed her hair blond,  and soon after she appeared in Vogue. On the cover, you can see the girl’s figure and a little bit of cleavage which made some fans angry, calling her a hypocrite and a sell-out. 

It’s mind-blowing to see how many people are judging and shaming a 19-year old for wearing a corset, changing hair color, and having a little bit of makeup on the face. Don’t all people go through this phase, called puberty?  This is a great example of people dehumanizing a teenager who happens to be famous in the public eye. 

Legacy Media Trying To Stay Relevant

It’s well known that as time changes, the media are trying to catch up with the trends and stay relevant. And, as thousands of people and news outlets are making comments about Billie Eilish’s cover on British Vogue, the singer seems to be not surprised at all and why is that?

Allegedly, the 19-year old singer and editors of the magazine Vogue knew how much attention they’ll get from the public.  It can be said that the singer knew what she was getting into and we can all applaud for a good marketing move. 

Media are always trying to adapt to the new trends and stay relevant, even if that means following the latest drama in the entertainment world. We see it all the time, it’s not a surprise. 

Put two and two together, the media makes a living from putting scandalous, clickable, and popular headlines and pictures, that’s nothing new. It has been that way from the very beginning and it will be like that probably forever. 

The Dark Side of Being Famous

Generally, a lot of people want to become famous without realizing the dark side of being famous. It’s very easy to see all the good things that come with fame like expensive cars, luxurious houses, and magnificent lifestyles. However, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. 

The number one reason why some individuals become famous is because their art speaks to a lot of people who are then willing to like, share, and promote it. Obviously, Billie Eilish wouldn’t have all those awards and fame if it weren’t for the people who listen to her music. 

However, the public eye tends to put famous people on the pedestal of sinlessness and perfection to the point of dehumanization. 

For example, Billie Eilish became worldwide famous when she was 14 years old. She had millions of people following her every step from a very early age, which sounds pretty intimidating and overwhelming. 

While signing autographs sounds pretty glamorous, having hundreds of cameras point at you constantly wherever you go doesn’t sound fun at all. Having a party on your private yacht sounds wonderful, but the inability to go out to the store without security by your side in fear of getting mobbed – not so much.

Finally, everything has its advantages and downsides. Don’t let yourself be fooled by the looks, as they can be pretty deceiving. Nothing is as perfect and glamorous as it looks. 

High Standards of Physical Appearance in Today’s Society

Billie Eilish’s cover in British Vogue is the perfect example of extremely unrealistic and toxic standards of physical appearance in today’s society. There’s something very disturbing about seeing thousands of people think they have a say in how a 19-year old girl should look.

Comments like “She should have kept wearing baggy clothes because she’s fat” is everything that’s wrong in this world. 

Luckily, the majority of people had very nice and supportive things to say, which led to the whole movement of body positivity. And as long as the majority of people are in the right mind, there is hope for this world.

Finally, it’s well known that social media is full of unrealistic images and beauty standards which impacts a lot of people’s mental health. It’s very important not to let those photoshopped pictures ruin your confidence and self-image.
