Why was Andy Dick arrested? Will he face jail time?
Andy Dick has been arrested for allegedly smashing a liquor bottle into his boyfriend’s head at his Los Angeles home. Dick was taken into police custody on November 5th and released just hours later on a $50,000 bail. His boyfriend sustained a large gash on his head from the assault.
The 55-year-old comedian is no stranger to domestic violence charges; in October, he bludgeoned his boyfriend with a frying pan during a dispute, according to a report by TMZ. This string of brutal incidents is just the latest in Dick’s long history of assault & sexual misconduct accusations, which began to swirl around the eccentric sketch comedy host as early as 2007.
Dick was fired for sexual harassment from the sets of two movies at the height of the #MeToo movement. Despite this apparent cancellation in 2017, Dick continues to make headlines for his violent and inappropriate behavior. How has the Love & Sense8 actor managed to evade substantial jail time for over a decade? We take a closer look at the alarming charges that Dick has racked up over the years.
Sordid past, thriving career
Andy Dick’s problematic conduct has been an open secret in Hollywood since 2007, when Jimmy Kimmel evicted him from the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live for groping guest Ivanka Trump.
Despite this fact, Dick has maintained a steady career as a voiceover & character actor, guest-starring in comedies like Dude, Where’s My Car? & Zoolander. He’s also a reality TV star and mainstay of shock-jock radio, guesting on The Howard Stern Show and appearing on Dancing with the Stars in 2013.
Dick has built a career out of wearing his scandals openly and stoking his own reputation as a forgivably eccentric dirty old man. In 2009, he leveraged his criminal offenses to his advantage by producing the web series House Arrest with Andy Dick while — you guessed it — he was on house arrest for drug charges. But in the post-#MeToo era, Dick’s immunity to punishment may finally be coming to an end.
“I’m not trying to sexually harass people”
Andy Dick seemingly confessed to his own indiscretions in 2017, when he denied sexual harassment allegations on the set of the movie Raising Buchanan. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, he admitted: “I didn’t grope anybody. I might have kissed somebody on the cheek to say goodbye and then licked them.”
“That’s my thing. […] I’m not trying to sexually harass people,” he said, despite being previously arrested three times for sexual assault. Dick was also forcibly escorted off the set of the movie Vampire Dad that same year for “multiple, flagrant acts of improper conduct & inappropriate contact with several cast and crew members,” as his termination letter reported.
In 2019, Dick was incarcerated for two weeks on sexual battery charges for groping his Lyft driver; he was released only due to overpopulation at the jail. In July 2021, he was arrested for brawling with a fellow diner while out to dinner with fiancée Elisa Jordana. His erratic and violent behavior has been linked to his alcohol & drug addictions, which he’s reportedly struggled with since the 1990s.
What will happen to Andy Dick?
Andy Dick insists that he is a reformed man, telling the Hollywood Reporter in 2017 that “I don’t grope people anymore. I don’t expose myself anymore. I do understand that the temperature in the world right now is delicate.”
However, it’s clear from his recent spate of domestic violence charges that Dick is not going to change his ways anytime soon. He’s scheduled to reappear in court next March.
