'Among Us' is a great game and its popularity has soared. This also means public lobbies are seeing more hackers.

How hackers in ‘Among Us’ are the true imposters without even playing

Hacking is a common problem in online multiplayer games. Hackers either cheat or mess with other people’s games in order to frustrate them. However, hacking in the latest popular online game Among Us has reached a point where it becomes a part of the game.

Every game is going to have some form of cheating and Among Us isn’t an exception. Now, simply the possibility of somebody cheating is starting to complicate how people play the game. Here is some more information about hacking in Among Us and how it’s messing with players.

Always the impostor hack

At the beginning of the game, two of the crew members are given the role of impostor. Their mission is to go around the map killing the other crewmates and trying to throw suspicion onto the non-impostors. If the crew correctly singles the impostors out, then the crew wins the round.

As Among Us has grown in popularity, hackers have tried to find ways to cheat and make the game easier. Some of these shortcuts include invisibility hacks, speed hacks, and insta-kills. There are other ways to cheat, including communicating with friends over Discord, a popular chatting app with gamers.

One of the hacks developed for Among Us is the “always impostor” mod, granting players the power to take on the role of impostor every round. This hack has complicated the game because there are flukes in which innocent players simply beat the odds by becoming the impostor for several rounds in a row. Many players have found this lucky circumstance suspicious and have accused these players of cheating.

Players being kicked

Some of the players accused of hacking get kicked out of the game by the other players. A user on Reddit shared a meme which stated they were given the role of impostor four times in a row and were kicked out of the game for hacking, despite not doing so.

Other users on Reddit commented on the post with similar stories about them being vote-kicked out of the game for coincidently getting the impostor role multiple times in a row. Some users said they just had one really good round as an impostor, were accused of cheating, then were kicked out of the game.

In some instances, hacking had been involved, but it was not carried out by the player. Some reports from players suggest hackers can take over their character and proceed to control the user’s in-game actions and chat. The player would then take the blame for it.

Reddit user InterestingMedia2 reported during a round, they lost control of their character, and it then proceeded to “kill four people including [their] impostor friend and everyone got mad.”

The developer’s response

InnerSloth, the developers of Among Us, said they are trying to fix the hacking situation. However, due to the massive popularity of Among Us, making any updates or changes could result in bugs, glitches, or other issues that break the game.

“We’re rushing to get an account system in place so we can have better moderation and reporting systems built around that,” programmer & business lead Forest Willard said to Kotaku, a popular gaming website. “Also getting help with making the servers better at detecting and blocking hacks. And investigating client-side hack prevention as well.”

While hacking & cheating are common, as well as annoying, in many online multiplayer games, trying to find hackers & cheaters in Among Us adds a whole new layer to the game. Now, players have to look out for hackers as well as impostors. It’s hard to decide which one is worse.

Then I joined another game and everyone assumed it was me because I warned them. So I got kicked out. I hope this gets fixed soon.
