On a recent sweltering Las Vegas night, during one of her acclaimed Weekends with Adele residency shows at The Colosseum, Adele was right in the middle of belting out “I Drink Wine” from her latest album, 30.
Then, it happened – the lyrics vanished from her memory. She stumbled, laughingly admitted her slip, and turned to the crowd for a lyrical lifeline. One fan came to the rescue, and with a cheeky promise of fifty bucks, the British superstar hit the reset button, ready to tackle the song afresh. But then, technical difficulties chimed in.
Tech troubles
With the unexpected pause, what’s a Grammy winner to do? If you’re Adele, you keep the vibe buzzing with a touch of impromptu humor. Teasing the audience with the possibility of a joke, she playfully refused to share it, claiming it was too risqué, adding just the right sprinkle of intrigue to the evening.
As soon as the crew had untangled the tech issues, Adele reintroduced herself and filled the venue with a flawless rendition of “I Drink Wine”. So, did she remember all the lyrics this time? Of course, she did!
Jock itch
During the same Vegas gig, Adele introduced her fans to a less glamorous aspect of her on-stage life – the trials of performing in Spanx. With her candid, comical delivery, she revealed how her excessive on-stage sweating had led to a surprising prescription: jock itch ointment. In her words, it made her sound like a hardcore Denver Nuggets enthusiast!
For those of you unfamiliar with jock itch, it’s a rash-causing fungal infection usually found in athletes due to warm and moist environments – in Adele’s case, thanks to her Spanx. Laughing off her predicament, the celebrated singer shared, rather unexpectedly, about her struggles with “body acne”. With that, she reminded us yet again that beneath the glitz and glam of the stage, stars are just as human as the rest of us.
Onwards and Upwards
After delivering intimate performances to 4,000 people for 34 nights at her Weekends With Adele residency, the “Hello” hitmaker isn’t showing signs of slowing down. In fact, she’s decided to extend her Las Vegas stay, promising to film and release concert footage for all her fans who couldn’t make it to the shows.
Kicking off last week, the new dates will span till November 4, giving her more opportunities to connect with her fans. Not only has Adele’s Vegas stint been a huge hit, but she’s also expertly used the intimate setting to share tidbits about her life, lacing her performances with humor, flamboyant stage effects, and a string of timeless classics.
