Did Nick Carter really rape a fan at a Backstreet Boys concert?
After the recent and tragic death of his younger brother Aaron Carter, Nick has faced a horrifying accusation. A woman is suing Nick who’s known as The Backstreet Boys bandmate for raping her when she was seventeen years old on a tour bus in 2001. Nick Carter has had a controversial career and has an equally disturbing family history.
Could these accusations of rape be true? Will 42-year-old Nick Carter face the consequences of his dark past? Here’s everything you need to know.
Family fights
Recently, Nick Carter has been in the spotlight for the most devastating and shocking reasons. Most notable was the recent passing of his younger brother Aaron Carter who passed away on November 5th of this year. Aaron wasn’t shy about sharing how tumultuous his family life was when growing up.
Nick Carter formally filed a restraining order against Aaron after he allegedly “harbors thoughts and intentions of killing my pregnant wife and unborn child”. Aaron denied any claims stating “I have never had thoughts of causing anyone pain, let alone taking anyone’s life. It was hurtful for me to read those things because if these people really knew me, they would have never used that as a tactic to control me.”
Nick & Aaron have remained distant for many years and never reconciled before Aaron’s sudden passing.
Fame
Nick Carter is now known for more than his fame with his boyband The Backstreet Boys. He’s also appeared in several TV shows, released a few solo albums, and also starred in his own reality show House of Carters.
Nick’s first solo album Now or Never, in 2002, debuted at #17 in its first week on Billboard 200 and sold 70,000 copies. Although the two singles released from the album had little impact on the U.S. charts, the album sold more than 550,000 copies worldwide.
Now, Nick Carter is the father of three children with his wife Lauren Kitt.
Fool us once
This isn’t the first time Nick Carter has been accused of sexual assault. Melissa Schuman is known for accusing the former Backstreet Boys member of rape in 2002. Schuman wrote that Carter performed oral sex on her, despite her refusals, and forced her to perform it on him.
“He was stronger and much bigger than me, and there was no way I would be able to open that door or have anyone help me,” Schuman wrote. “My friend couldn’t help me, I didn’t even know where she was.” According to her, she felt “trapped and scared” by Carter.
Schuman wrote a detailed blog post in 2017 which shared her horrific experience. She also stated that despite saying she was saving herself for marriage Nick raped her. Carter denied the allegations at the time in a statement provided to CNN.
“Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual. We went on to record a song and perform together, and I was always respectful and supportive of Melissa both personally and professionally.”
Paperwork filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office stated, “The reporting party alleged that in 2003, she was the victim of a sexual assault perpetrated by the suspect in his apartment. The victim was 18 years old at the time of the assault. The statute of limitations expired in 2013, therefore, an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence is not warranted and the matter is declined.”
Consequences
Shannon Ruth claims that Carter forced her to perform oral sex on him and then raped her after inviting her onto the boy band’s bus following a concert in Tacoma, Washington. According to Buzzfeed News, “As a result of the alleged assault, Carter infected her with human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause genital warts and even cancer, the complaint states.”
“The last 21 years have been filled with pain, confusion, frustration, shame, and self-harm that are a direct result of Nick Carter raping me,” Ruth said as she shared her story. “After he raped me, I remember him calling me a ‘retarded bitch’ and grabbing me and leaving bruises on my arm. I’d also like to say that Carter tried to scare me into silence by saying no one would believe me if I told what happened.
“He was nasty and threatening, saying I would go to jail if I told. He also said he would turn people against me because he was Nick Carter and he had the power to wreck my life.” Carter’s attorney Michael Holtz provided a statement “not only legally meritless but also entirely untrue.”
“Unfortunately, for several years now, Ms. Ruth has been manipulated into making false allegations about Nick – and those allegations have changed repeatedly and materially over time. No one should be fooled by a press stunt orchestrated by an opportunistic lawyer – there is nothing to this claim whatsoever, which we have no doubt the courts will quickly realize.”
