Billie Eilish: Does her new album cover mark a change in her career?
Billie Eilish made a name for herself after her award-winning first album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? We’re sure you can remember the album cover for that with Billie Eilish’s whited-out eyes, looking positively demonic on the album cover. Between that and Eilish’s moody, dark lyrics mixed with visually horror-influenced videos? It was a moment.
Now, however, Eilish is rocking a new look. She’s changed her black hair with toxic green roots for going blonde, marking a new era in her music. A couple days ago, she revealed her album cover for her newest album, Happier Than Ever. But if you think that means Eilish’s moody, meaningful lyrics are gone? Then her newly released single “Your Power” will put that worry to rest.
Reinvention
Honestly, the album cover for Happier Than Ever marks a reinvention for Billie Eilish. Which, hey, is something that every artist likes to go through. Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Madonna, Cher, etc, every amazing woman in music has different phases in her career. Eilish’s first album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? and Happier Than Ever are a total 180 of each other.
In fact Billie Eilish seems to be using this album cover to change her dark & haunting world into something more carefree & bright. Fans tracked this change last year with her lead single off Happier Than Ever, “Therefore I Am”. The video of which saw Eilish running around an empty mall just having fun and being the teen that she is and, honestly, doing everything we’ve ever dreamed about.
Eilish wants to share the happier place she’s in with her fans. She said in a 2019 interview with Elle, “I haven’t been happy for years. I didn’t think I would be happy again. And here I am — I’ve gotten to a point where I’m finally OK.” She added later that, “All I can say now is, for anybody who isn’t doing well, it will get better. Have hope.”
“Your Power”
Billie Eilish released her third single off Happier Than Ever on Thursday, April 29. “Your Power” definitely harkens back to the moodier pieces of Eilish’s first era of music. In the song, Eilish sings about power dynamics, especially those within relationships, when one partner takes control & advantage of another due to an imbalance of power within it.
Eilish directed the music video herself, which sees a giant anaconda wrap around her body as she sings to it. On “Your Power”, she said on Instagram, “This is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. I feel very vulnerable putting this one out because I hold it so close to my heart. This is about many different situations that we’ve all either witnessed or experienced. I hope this can inspire change.”
In fact, Eilish is excited for all of her fans to listen to Happier Than Ever. When the album cover, track listing, and release date drop, she said, “This is my favorite thing I’ve ever created and I am so excited and nervous and EAGER for you to hear it. I can’t even tell you. I’ve never felt so much love for a project than I do for this one. Hope you feel what I feel.”
Happier Than Ever will be released on July 30.
