As a fisherman, you know how important it is to have the best fishing gear. But have you ever considered how your actions impact the environment?

You might not think so, but if you are an avid fisherman, then there are some things that you need to be aware of to be environmentally friendly while fishing. Mitchel Zelman gives six tips on being environmentally friendly while fishing that will help protect our world’s oceans and water sources!

Recycle your Fishing Line and Hooks

One easy way to help the environment while fishing is by recycling your line and hooks. In some cases, you might be able to find a recycling bin for this type of waste at the local tackle shop or marina. However, if you are fishing in the middle of nowhere or taking a trip to your favorite spot out on the water, then it might be worth carrying a recycling bag with you.

This way, when there are no nearby bins to utilize for line or hook recycling, then at least they’ll be contained, and you can dispose of them properly when you get to a dock with bins. If there are no bins available, take them home with you and recycle them yourself!

Use a Biodegradable Bait

When using bait for fishing, try to biodegradable like corn or shrimp instead of plastic lures. This will help reduce the amount of plastic left in our waterways and oceans. It’s a simple way to improve the quality of life for our oceans and reduce your impact on nature.

Plus, it can be a more effective way to bait your hook. Just make sure to re-use your biodegradable bait, as you don’t want to be wasting it. This will help reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in our waterways, and it’s better for the fish too!

Carry a Reusable Bag

Another great way to be environmentally friendly while fishing is to carry a reusable bag with you. This can help you collect all the fish waste and trash that ends up on your boat. It can also help reduce the amount of waste you produce while fishing.

This will help minimize the amount of trash left behind on our waterways and oceans. Plus, it’s just good practice to use reusable bags for your groceries and other items whenever you can. If you end up with any pieces of plastic or garbage, make sure to remove them before they wash ashore!

Keep an Eye out for Trash on the Shoreline

While fishing, try to watch for any trash on the shoreline. This will help reduce the amount of trash that washes up on shore, and it’s good for your safety too! In some cases, you might be able to remove the trash before it becomes a problem.

If there are no recycling bins nearby, take the recyclables back home with you until a recycling company can collect them. If you see something like this, make sure to take it with you when you leave so that it doesn’t end up in our waterways!

Don’t Leave Behind Any Litter

If there’s one thing we can say about fisherman (and outdoor enthusiasts in general), it’s that we don’t like leaving behind a mess when we’re done enjoying nature! Even if recycling isn’t available where you are fishing, at least pick up what little litter might be left behind before heading home.

This is also a great way to encourage more people to take care of our environment. If you see someone littering, make sure to respectfully ask them to pick up their trash and remind them about the impact it can have on our planet. Be respectful to the places you visit so other people will want to keep going back, too!

Carry Recyclables Home with You

One last way to be environmentally friendly while fishing is to make sure you carry recyclables back home with you if there are no recycling bins around. That way, the next time your local recycling company picks up garbage, they will also pick up any plastic bottles and other items that were left behind at the lake.

It’s a small effort, but it can make a big difference in helping our environment! By being aware of how we impact our world while out on the water, we might have more fun too! By following these simple tips from Mitch Zelman, you can be an environmentally friendly fisherman while still enjoying the great outdoors.

You’ll have a cleaner shoreline and more fish to catch! It’s just one way that we’re trying to do our part in being green by reducing waste from products on land and at sea. Fishing is a great way to connect with nature, and it’s even better when we can do it responsibly.
