Brendan Fraser is back: Everything we know about A24’s ‘The Whale’

Guess who’s back from the jungle? Brendan Fraser has swung back into our hearts in his latest film, The Whale. Twitter account @DisscussingFilm announced Darren Aronofky is taking the challenge to bring back Fraser and create a legendary film.

Per Variety, director Darren Aronofsky has just recruited Brendan Fraser into the film adaptation of the play about obesity by Samuel D. Hunter. American entertainment company A24 has received rights for the upcoming film and the award-winning off-broadway production back in 2012. So what makes The Whale so special?

What is The Whale about?

The Whale starts with a tragic reunion between a father, Charlie, and his teenage daughter after he left his family for a new kind of love. Charlie threw away his family for a gay lover but when his partner died he found his life crumbling. Charlie suddenly becomes a 600-pound man drowning in his grief and an insane amount of food

Thanks Samuel D. Hunter

Samuel D. Hunter, the original playwright of The Whale, has only the kindest things to say about his story coming to the big screen. Hunter has won multiple awards for his plays from the MacArthur award to being awarded with the Drama Desk Award & the Lucille Lortel Award. As reported by Screenrant, Hunter expressed, “adapting my play into a screenplay has been a real labor of love for me”.

Samuel D. Hunter proudly confessed: “This story (The Whale) is deeply personal and I’m very thankful it will have the chance to reach a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was a college freshman writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film.”

Production team

The Whale will be co-produced by Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures amongst the highly praised director Darren Aronofksy who released films like Black Swan & Requiem for a Dream. The proud director has learnt from his mistakes with the film Mother in 2017 which had terrible reviews and even lower ratings.

Darren Aronofksy has also signed a deal with other well-known film companies like National Geographic & Disney Plus for the upcoming Limitless. The Whale director & producer will focus on capturing a “different way we can live better for longer” for the Limitless series according to Discussing Film

Fraser’s comeback

If fans didn’t see Brendan Fraser’s role in FX’s Trust, they’re pretty happy that The Whale will star him now. Fraser is most famously known for starring in The Mummy franchise amongst other action packed films like G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra & Looney Tunes: Back in Action. The George of the Jungle actor has been a long way from public eye, but could The Whale be his window back into Hollywood?

According to Variety, Darren Aronofsky is known to pull old Hollywood actors back into the limelight as he did the same thing for Mickey Rourke in 2008. If any one can do it, Aronofsky can!

Per Discussing Film, The Whale film will start filming Brendan Fraser and the rest of the unknown cast in March 2021. With the filming so soon, fans can already picture a sequel in 2022 but nothing about a sequel has been confirmed. What’s confirmed is that with such a highly acclaimed playwright like Samuel D.Hunter the film will most likely be a success story.

It’s time to keep a lookout for the rest of The Whale cast. Let us know what you think about the A24 film in the comments below.
