Alison Tavel’s RESYNATOR Premieres in Los Angeles
Last month, the Los Angeles premiere of Alison Tavel’s RESYNATOR transformed the Beverly Hills Fine Arts Theatre into a star-studded celebration of music, innovation, and personal discovery. This highly anticipated debut feature documentary attracted some of the biggest names in the music and entertainment industry, solidifying its status as a top contender in this year’s awards season.
Hosted by Grammy-winning, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-inducted songwriter and producer Jimmy Jam, the evening was moderated by SiriusXM DJ and music supervisor Kat Corbett and featured electrifying sets by DJs Money Mark, Tara Busch (I Speak Machine), and Jordan Brookes. With its compelling narrative and dynamic event, RESYNATOR truly struck a chord with its audience.
A Journey Ten Years in the Making
RESYNATOR is more than just a film about a synthesizer; it’s a deeply personal odyssey. Alison Tavel began the project as an effort to resurrect the Resynator, her late father Don Tavel’s groundbreaking synthesizer from the 1970s. The journey started as a technical challenge but quickly evolved into an emotional exploration of her father’s genius and the complex truths of his life.
Alison’s decade-long commitment to the film took her across the globe, collaborating with estranged family members, fellow inventors, and an array of celebrated musicians. Along the way, she unlocked the mysteries of the Resynator while building a deeper connection to her father’s legacy.
The documentary features an impressive roster of musical icons, including Peter Gabriel, Grace Potter, Mark Ronson, Fred Armisen, Gotye, Jon Anderson, and Jimmy Jam. Through their eyes, the film explores the Resynator’s revolutionary impact on music technology and its emotional resonance as a bridge between Alison and her father.
A Premiere for the Ages
The premiere attracted a dazzling array of music royalty and entertainment insiders. Guests enjoyed bespoke “Resynate Your Mind” Margaritas and tacos from HomeState, adding a playful, relaxed atmosphere to an otherwise monumental event.
Attendees included producer Mark Ronson, legendary songwriters Diane Warren and Jackson Browne, and members of iconic bands such as My Morning Jacket, The War on Drugs, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Actors Patty Guggenheim (She-Hulk), Taylor Handley (Mayor of Kingstown), and filmmaker Sacha Gervasi (Hitchcock, Anvil) also graced the red carpet.
Alison Tavel’s husband and collaborator, musician Matt Musty, jokingly remarked on the film’s lengthy production timeline, saying it took “longer than she’s known me.” This lighthearted comment underscored the years of dedication that went into creating RESYNATOR.
Honoring Innovation
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a Certificate of Recognition from the Recording Academy to Mike Beigel, founder of Mu-Tron and collaborator on the Resynator project. Jimmy Jam praised Beigel’s contributions, calling the film “a beautiful combination of technology and humanity” and “the most unique film you are going to see.”
What’s Next for RESYNATOR?
Following the premiere, RESYNATOR began its limited theatrical run in North America, with additional For Your Consideration (FYC) screenings planned in the coming weeks. The film will be available for digital rental and purchase in December, just in time for awards season.
Looking ahead, Alison Tavel is expanding her father’s legacy by restoring additional Resynators and developing a software version of the synthesizer, ensuring its innovative spirit lives on.
A Story That Resonates
At its core, RESYNATOR is a celebration of connection—between past and present, innovation and artistry, and father and daughter. With its compelling narrative, star-studded support, and impeccable production values, the film is poised to make waves not only in the music world but also in the hearts of viewers worldwide.
As RESYNATOR continues its journey through theaters and awards circuits, it stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and the universal human desire to uncover and honor our roots.
Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, a music lover, or simply a fan of deeply moving stories, RESYNATOR is a film that will “resynate” with you long after the credits roll.
