Psyonix created a gem of a game back in 2015. Rocket League asks the question: What if soccer could be played with rocket-powered vehicles? The answer? A phenomenal new sport would be born.
In Rocket League, two teams of up to four players face off against each other. The game more-or-less follows the rules of soccer, but instead of running across a field, players squeal their tires and use rocket propulsion to launch themselves at the ball. Rocket League is one of the most popular e-sport games around, and it’s been free for the PS4 and other systems since September 2020.
Battle royale games are all the rage right now, and Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends is one of the best. The game had a surprise release in February of 2019, and it’s exploded in popularity since then. In April 2021, Respawn Entertainment reported the game had 100 million active players.
In Apex Legends, up to sixty players face off in teams of two or three. The game focuses on gunplay and special abilities rather than the building mechanics favored by other popular battle royales. With impressive graphics, a wide variety of playable characters, and constantly running matches, Apex Legends is one of the best free games available for the PS4 right now.
Despite being free to play, Genshin Impact is one of the most commercially successful games in recent memory. It was published by developer miHoYo in September 2020, and six months later, it had earned over $1 billion. All that revenue comes from players who want to purchase new characters, weapons, and other in-game resources.
Genshin Impact is an action role-playing game with a massive open world for players to explore. The story follows a protagonist known as the Traveller, who is searching for their lost twin in the world of Teyvat. Players explore Teyvat’s seven nations, switch between different characters, and battle against evil gods & creatures.
Destiny 2 is Bungie’s sequel to their 2014 online-only multiplayer first-person shooter game Destiny. Upon release in 2017, Destiny 2 was pay-to-play, but the game changed its model in October of 2019. Critics & players have agreed that Destiny 2 is a big step up from its predecessor in terms of story & gameplay.
The game has already received numerous expansions, and Bungie has plans to keep adding onto the game for several more years. The newest expansion, Beyond Light, brought a massive overhaul to the game and added a whole slew of new content for players to explore. With all the activity taking place within Destiny 2, it’s definitely worth a play.
Epic Games is often associated with their major hit Fortnite, but they’ve published plenty of other exciting material. Dauntless, developed by Phoenix Labs, is an action roleplaying game inspired by the Monster Hunter series. It’s a promising first game from a relatively new studio.
In the fantasy world of Dauntless, monsters known as Behemoths prey on humans after an apocalyptic event has torn the world apart. Players take on the role of Slayers and kill as many of these Behemoths as they can. The game can be played in single-player mode or online with up to six people. Dauntless is one of the best free cooperative games for the PS4.
