Kim Kardashian on her latest Instagram drama
Everything Kim Kardashian does ends up causing drama, whether she intends to or not. The latest Kardashian tempest in a teapot has Kim in hot water over her new shapewear line recently introduced on Instagram.
On Sunday, September 13, the thirty-nine-year-old Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, announced Skims’ upcoming line of maternity shapewear, promising “the best in comfort and support for your changing body during and after pregnancy.” Fans on Instagram immediately questioned whether Kardashian should promote compression shorts and smoothing materials for pregnant bodies.
“What’s the point of even being pregnant if you have to hide the journey of your bump/ everything that comes with being pregnant?,” one person commented.
“When I’m pregnant that will be my one chance to enjoy being fat . . . don’t see the point in this while I’m creating a miracle inside of me,” another said.
Watchers wading in
English actress Jameela Jamil, who is ever generous with her opinions, took to her Instagram page with the comment, “Lot [sic] of talk on the internet today about pregnancy shapewear,” she said. “And each to their own. But from the discourse online I will say, I wish we could just normalize just focusing on the inside of a pregnant body, not the outside.”
Jamil continued, “You don’t need your shape corrected or hidden. You don’t need an even more awkward obstacle between you and a piss. You just need to try and ride with this miracle and do your best to be as happy/comfortable as is possible within your circumstances. Pregnancy is hard enough, with enough worries already.”
Kardashian responded to the critics on her Instagram Story. “To anyone who has an issue with maternity solution wear, and if you haven’t been pregnant before you may not know the struggle of what it’s like carrying all of this weight the way I did along with millions of strong women,” she wrote.
“SKIMS maternity line is not to slim but to support. The belly part doesn’t slim your belly, it’s actually sheer and a thinner layered material compared to the rest of the garment. It provides support to help with the uncomfortable weight being carried in your stomach which affects your lower back — and the compression on the leggings helps with pain relief caused by swelling.”
In an Instagram Story on Sunday, Chrissy Teigen, who is pregnant with her third child, also weighed in. “Hi guys, actual pregnant person here,” she began, while wearing the SKIMS shapewear. “Just wanting to show you and maybe talk a little about what pregnancy shapewear is.”
“We’re not idiots,” Teigen continued. “None of us think that this is making us smaller . . . We do it so we feel high and tight. Honestly, it feels easier to get up, it feels easier to move around when you’re not flopping all over the place. It just makes you feel better.” Teigen also stressed that if you don’t want to wear the undergarments, you don’t have to.

Kardashian also shared on Instagram that the materials can lend comfort and support after giving birth, especially for those recovering from a Cesarean section, adding that “tens of thousands” of pregnant women requested it and that maternity shapewear “was something I personally needed when I was pregnant myself.”
