Is the Prince Harry and Meghan Oprah interview shady? See the first trailer
Next Sunday, Meghan Markle & Prince Harry’s big two-hour Oprah interview special will air, where the Duke & Duchess of Sussex will speak candidly for the first time since stepping back from their senior royal family roles about what happened. CBS released the first teaser from the interview tonight, and it makes one point abundantly clear: This is going to truly be a candid discussion about the couple’s private struggles.
Meghan first
The first look at Meghan Markle & Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey previewed Sunday February 28, during on CBS’ 60 Minutes. The teaser was of the trio’s sit-down, Oprah with Meghan & Harry: A CBS Primetime Special.
Meghan sits with Oprah first, dressed in a stylish black Armani dress. Oprah asks her at one point, “Were you silent or were you silenced? I just want to make it clear to everybody. There is no subject that’s off limits.”Oprah also says in the 30-second clip, “‘Almost unsurvivable’? Sounds like there was a breaking point.”
While nothing Meghan said was revealed, one comment from Harry was, presumably about why they stepped back from their roles. As seen in the preview, Meghan & Harry will have individual interviews with Winfrey as well as a joint sit-down.
Now Prince Harry
In a second preview, which also aired during the 60 Minutes broadcast, Harry spoke about his late mother, Princess Diana. “My biggest concern was history repeating itself,” said Harry, who is expecting his second child with Meghan.
“You know, for me, I’m just really relieved and happy to be sitting here, talking to you with my wife by my side because I can’t begin to imagine what it must’ve been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago,” he told Winfrey about the public scrutiny Diana dealt with. “Because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we have each other,” Harry said as Meghan agreed.
Diana separated from Prince Charles and was largely shunned by the royal family in a highly publicized break-up during the 1990s. She died in a car crash in 1997, and Harry has frequently criticized the intense media coverage she faced as a contributing factor to her death.
Media maddening
Prince Harry says he left royal life because the UK press was ‘destroying’ his mental health. Harry & Meghan have not taken part in media engagements in the year since they stepped away from the royal family, a move that caused a crisis at Buckingham Palace in early 2020.
Last week, Harry spoke about the decision in a lengthy segment on James Corden’s Late Late Show, as the couple now begin to engage with friendlier media figures. “We all know what the British press can be like, and it was destroying my mental health,” Harry said during the segment with Corden. “I was like, this is toxic. So I did what any husband and what any father would do.”
At the end of the preview, Winfrey, who is also one of Meghan & Harry’s neighbors in their Montecito neighborhood in California, told the couple, “You’ve said some pretty shocking things here.”
Diana is here
Speaking of Diana, seems like she’ll be at the interview too – at least in spirit. Since all the to-do about Prince Harry & Meghan stepping down from royal duty, they have seemingly kept Diana alive in their hearts.
Meghan Markle chose some very special sparkle for her upcoming Oprah interview. In the teaser for the tell-all, the 39-year-old Duchess of Sussex accessorized her black floral-embroidered Armani dress with a diamond tennis bracelet from Princess Diana’s collection.
Markle first wore the sparkling Cartier style for a state dinner in Fiji during her royal tour of Oceania with Prince Harry in October 2018. Later, she wore it at a reception in Tonga the same month, and to observe Commonwealth Day in 2019. It’s also the same bracelet that was used to make the Duchess’ three-stone engagement ring in 2017.
“The main stone itself I sourced from Botswana, and the little diamonds [on] either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection to make sure that she’s with us on this — on this crazy journey together,” Prince Harry, 36, explained at the time.
