‘What we do in the Shadows’ on FX: All the reasons you need to watch

If you love vampires, raise your hand 🙋. If you love dry comedy, raise your hand 🙋. Lucky for you – and us – FX’s newest vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows’s second season is now airing. So if you’ve never watched this hilarious TV show, now’s the perfect time to sink your teeth in. Pun totally intended.

Incredible team

The crew that brought What We Do in the Shadows to life is nothing short of legendary. Jemaine Clement, the creator of the 2014 mockumentary the show is based on, not only  hopped on board – he also brought a handful of talented directors & producers with him. 

Among the list of directors sits Taika Waititi, creative mind behind Marvel’s Thor Ragnarok back in 2017 & Jojo Rabbit more recently in 2019. Although Waititi is behind the camera, unlike his leading role in Jojo Rabbit, we’re still more than happy his talents are being utilized on What We Do in the Shadows.

Cast

Not only is the team behind the camera to die for, the team in front is too. Apart from the occasional cameos from well known actors, you likely aren’t familiar with a majority of the cast in What We Do in the Shadows. By no means do their small names discredit them. These actors brought their A-game to every single scene they’re in, leaving us amazed.

Terrifyingly funny S1E7

It might sound ridiculous making a single episode one of our reasons to watch What We Do in the Shadows. But this episode alone is worth the entire subscription to Hulu. “The Trial” rightfully has a 9.4 rating on IMDB, making it the highest-rated episode of the series.

“The Trial” is terrifyingly funny, littered with countless references or cameos to almost any vampire movie/TV show you can think of. Yes, that even includes a cameo from the beloved Danny Trejo.

Fleshed-out world

When it comes to worldbuilding, Jemaine Clement doesn’t cut any corners. Throughout What We Do in the Shadows, we get countless hilarious moments fleshing out this world. From vampires reacting to human food to vampires gathering for biannual orgies, Clement has seemingly thought through all the consequences of his premise.

The amount of detail put into the context of What We Do in the Shadows is just the worldbuilding icing on this instant classic comedy cake.

It’s alive!

Unlike the characters in the show, What We Do in the Shadows is still alive & kicking. In fact, it’s barely a newborn. There’s nothing quite like getting into a new fandom on the ground floor, rather than years after a broken series has died. Our guess is: this already thriving fandom is only gonna grow more as future seasons drop.

Season 2 is already even better

What We Do in the Shadows’s second season is barely halfway through. And with its success, we’ll likely hear news of a third season before too long. With higher stakes, more cameos, and plenty more comedy to go around, What We Do in the Shadows’s second season is off to a great start.
