Is ‘Saved by the Bell’ coming back? Everything we know
It’s alright ‘cause they’re saved by the bell. Or, so this paraphrase of the iconic 90s TV theme for Saved by the Bell goes. This beloved sitcom spawned a popular franchise that ran originally from 1989 to 1993 and then would continue on with Saved by the Bell: The College Years and Saved by the Bell: The New Class. There were also two made for TV movies.
Now the popular and beloved Saved by the Bell will return on NBC’s Peacock streaming service. (Yes another one is coming.) Here’s everything that we know about this return to Bayside High.
What is the Saved by the Bell revival about?
The official logline for the new Saved by the Bell series is as follows: “When California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state – including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over-privileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality.”
Basically, it sounds like something of a culture clash when kids of different socio-economic classes and backgrounds will be forced together to see what happens. It’s also keeping in with Saved by the Bell’s previous commitment to exploring topics that affect kids.
Saved by the Bell had several “very special episodes,” which dealt with addiction, drugs, oil spills, homelessness, drinking, and driving, basically the whole gamut.
Is the old cast of Saved by the Bell returning?
Given that Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) is now governor of California, yes. Gosselaar will appear in three episodes of Saved by the Bell’s first season as Zack Morris. Tiffani Thiessen, who plays Zack’s sweetheart turned wife Kelly Kapowski, will also return with him. Unlike what the creator of the series Peter Engel thought about that relationship (that it would end in divorce), it looks like Zack and Kelly are still together.
In addition to appearing, Gosselaar will also serve as executive producer for Saved by the Bell.
Also confirmed to return for the revival are Mario Lopez, who played A.C. Slater, and Elizabeth Berkley, who played Jessie Spano, are also confirmed to return from the original cast. Though for how many episodes and their roles in the revival are unknown at the time.
Who are the new kids in Saved by the Bell?
For the revival of Saved by the Bell, we only know about two roles cast at this time.
John Michael Higgins (Great News) has been cast as the beleaguered principal of Bayside High. Principal Toddman is described as “constantly being pranked by his privileged students and yelled at by their entitled parents. But all this changes when Bayside gets an influx of new, low-income students and Toddman gets a second chance to really make a difference.”
As for the students, so far only one has been cast. Josie Totah (Champions) will play Lexi, a cheerleader at Bayside. Lexi is described as “a beautiful, sharp-tongued cheerleader and the most popular girl at Bayside High who is both admired and feared by her fellow students.”
When is Saved by the Bell coming out?
According to outlets, NBC is looking to launch Peacock in April 2020. Honestly? We wouldn’t be too surprised if that changed as we haven’t heard a lot about this streaming service yet. Not like its competitor HBO Max, which will be released in May 2020.
We don’t have a release date for the Saved by the Bell revival.
