Catch up with the 2020 Champions League: What are the standings?

The group stages of the Champions League are finally coming to an end and the time for the group winners to go head-to-head is almost upon us. We have all the recent match information from the past few games, so take a look and see who the top teams of this season are. 

Manchester United has just been knocked out of the Champions League after their devastating loss against RB Leipzig on Tuesday, December 8th. All eyes are now on Real Madrid as they have won the Champions League thirteen times. Real Madrid will play against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Wednesday, December 9th. 

Currently, eleven teams are clear for the next round of the Champions League. These teams include Premier League champions Liverpool, Chelsea, Sevilla, Barcelona, Juventus, Man City, Porto, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Lazio, and RB Leipzig. 

Don’t lose hope if your favorite teams aren’t mentioned, because the Champion’s League has a couple teams still able to qualify for the knockout rounds. The remaining teams are: Atletico Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg, Mönchengladbach, Shakhtar Donetsk, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Atalanta BC, and AFC Ajax. 

Group A

UEFA’s eight groups consisting of four teams, with Wednesday’s fixtures between Bayern and Lokomotiv. Bayern is currently on the top of Group A’s board and Bayern have already been crowned the winners of the group. Lokomotiv is at the bottom of the board with only three points and Wednesday’s game will be their last game of the Champions League for 2020. 

Group B

Real Madrid is at a draw alongside FC Shakhtar Donetsk with seven points on the log. The group’s standings has Borussia Mönchengladbach at the number one spot with eight points. Internazionale Milano won’t be progressing to the next round of the Champions League. 

If Real Madrid beat Borussia Mönchengladbach, their standings will rise and they’ll progress to the next round of the Champions League. SkySports reported if Internazionale Milano beat Shakhtar Donetsk, that’d be a much sweeter victory for the Spanish team, Real Madrid.

Group C

Group C is looking at a rival for third place as Manchester City FC have taken the top of the board with thirteen points. Manchester City hasn’t lost one game in 2020’s Champions League with four wins and one draw. Man City will play against Olympique de Marseille who is currently tied for third place with Olympiacos FC. 

Group D

Premier League champions, Liverpool are on the top of Group D’s fixtures with twelve points. On Wednesday, December 9th all four teams will go head-to-head for the group’s final fixtures. Ajax vs Atalanta will play in Amsterdam and Liverpool vs Midtjylland in Herning. The fight for second place is between Ajax & Atalanta, their standings putting them only one point apart. 

Group E

According to UEFA, Chelsea FC and Sevilla FC will continue to the next round of the Champions League with only a one point difference. Considering how Chelsea has not lost a game yet during the competition compared to Sevilla, their high standing is not surprising. 

Group F

The German team, Borussia Dortmund will be progressing alongside SS Lazio after a tough battle to reach the Champions League knockouts. Club Brugge and FC Zenit have been eliminated from the league. 

Group G

Goal reported the latest match between Juventus and FC Barcelona has caused quite the stir for Barcelona’s Messi after a three-goal loss. Juventus and Barcelona have tied with their standings on Group G and will progress to the next round of the Champions League, but according to RTL, there will be a conversation about Messi’s future standings in the Barcelona club. 

Group H

Manchester United may have lost, but the final progression of the top team in Group H is up to the PSG vs Istanbul Basaksehir game. The PSG vs Istanbul Basaksehir game was moved to Wednesday due to a racist incident causing players to walk off the field. PSG currently stands at the top of Group H’s board and will likely progress to the next round. 

The Champions League knockout games will start on February 15th, 2021 andthe Champion League finals are on May 29th, 2021. Despite the long wait, don’t give up on your favorite team just yet. Let us know in the comments below who you are rooting for!
