‘The Umbrella Academy’: Will season 3 differ from the third comic?
The Umbrella Academy season 3 is currently in production. While we don’t know when the series will be out, COVID guidelines mean shorter days which means a longer production period for the crew & cast. We do know some of the details of what to expect when the beloved series returns to Netflix: the Sparrow Academy for example along with any timeline changes made by the team in the past.
But how different will The Umbrella Academy season 3 be compared to the third comic in the series? Um, well, if we’re going in order of the comics released? It will be very different believe it or not, especially if you were expecting the television series to go in order of The Umbrella Academy comic series.
The Sparrow Academy
The plot of The Umbrella Academy season 3 is not following the third book in the series, which is The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion. Instead, there’s a new comic in development, which is book four of The Umbrella Academy focusing on the plotline of the Sparrow Academy. The Sparrows were introduced in book three of The Umbrella Academy series, but this is obviously a bigger focus.
More interestingly, we won’t know exactly what’s going to go down in The Umbrella Academy season 3. According to Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy: Sparrow Academy will have the major plot points for season 3 of the series and also answer the question of what happened to some of the children born on the same day as the members of the Umbrella Academy.
Details are being kept under wraps for both the show and for the upcoming comic. So we’re really going in blind. All that we know is that season three sees Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) alive, but with a new Academy. One of them being the deceased Umbrella Academy member Ben (Justin H. Min), who is now part of the Sparrow Academy as “a Machiavellian tactician”.
What about Vanya?
What fans are really curious about, moving forward, is how The Umbrella Academy will handle Vanya’s character in light of Elliot Page’s coming out as trans & nonbinary (he uses he/they pronouns). Vanya, for the best two seasons, has identified as a cisgender woman. While Page will continue playing Vanya in The Umbrella Academy season 3, people speculate if Vanya will have a storyline that reflects Page’s own real life.
Given that plenty of cisgender actors have played trans characters without an issue means that the reverse should be able to happen without a problem. Seeing, however, that Page is in the beginning stages of his transition and living as his true self, there is the mental health aspect of such a decision of doing so to take into account here.
Ultimately, Vanya’s storyline comes down to what a) Page is comfortable doing and b) what the creators have come up with. Presumably, hopefully, the writing team & Page discussed Vanya’s storyline along with gauging how comfortable Page. According to We Got This Covered, The Umbrella Academy season 3, reportedly, will have a storyline for Vanya that reflects Page’s real-life transition. Now this news came from someone’s Patron page, according to We Got This Covered, so we won’t know until someone associated with the show or Page himself spills the beans regarding Vanya’s storyline.
