Renaissance man: The best movies starring Jason Sudeikis

Jason Sudeikis is a versatile actor with a talent for comedy and drama alike. He has found global fame as the star of the show Ted Lasso on Apple TV, which has earned him several awards and nominations, but he already had an impressive film and TV career by the time he stepped into his signature role.

Sudeikis, the nephew of Cheers actor George Wendt, has starred in several hit movies throughout his career that have showcased his range and acting skills. He can make you cry laughing or make you cry from emotional anguish, and that’s not easy to do.

In this post, we’ll take a look at some of the best movies with Jason Sudeikis that you must watch.

Horrible Bosses (2011)

Horrible Bosses is a dark comedy that stars Sudeikis, Jason Bateman and Charlie Day. It follows three friends who decide to kill their respective bosses due to their unbelievably bad treatment. Sudeikis’ portrayal of Kurt Buckman, a womanizer with a terrible boss, is hilarious and he delivers some of the movie’s best one-liners.

He also has stellar chemistry with every actor he encounters, whether it be his own bad boss, played by Colin Farrell, or the boss of Day’s character, played by Jennifer Aniston in a hilariously devious turn. The sequel isn’t bad, either.

We’re the Millers (2013)

We’re the Millers is a comedy that follows a drug dealer (Sudeikis) who creates a fake family to smuggle drugs across the border. The movie stars Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, and Will Poulter as the hilariously incongruous “family.” Sudeikis steals the show once again, with his quick wit and superb comedic timing being sharp as ever.

There were talks of doing a sequel to We’re the Millers, given how well it did at the box office, but the plans were ultimately scrapped. While it’s a bummer we didn’t get to see more, it does make the original more special.

Drinking Buddies (2013)

Drinking Buddies is a romantic comedy-drama that tells the story of two co-workers (Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde) who are best friends but have different romantic partners. The movie explores themes of friendship, love, and infidelity with surprisingly frank dialogue, and Sudeikis gives one of his most nuanced and subtle performances.

Drinking Buddies is also interesting because it features multiple scenes between Sudeikis and his ex-fiance, Wilde. Their chemistry is infectious, and it’s easy to see why they fell for each other offscreen.

Colossal (2016)

Colossal is a science-fiction comedy that features Anne Hathaway and Sudeikis in the lead roles. The movie follows a woman who realizes she is somehow connected to a giant monster that is destroying Seoul, South Korea. It’s an admittedly bizarre premise, but it ultimately works due to the committed work of the two leads.

Sudeikis’ portrayal of a kind-hearted friend who may not be what he seems is one of the movie’s many enjoyable surprises. He truly excels when it comes to being both likable and unpredictable.

Booksmart (2019)

Booksmart is a comedy-drama movie directed by Olivia Wilde. The movie follows two academic overachievers (Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein) who decide to have some fun on the night before graduation.

Sudeikis plays the role of the high school principal, who serves as a comedic foil to the movie’s wild antics. He’s not in the movie for very long, but he lends a grounded humor and a sturdy adult presence. It’s also fun to see him reunite with Wilde in her directorial debut.

____

Jason Sudeikis has starred in several hit movies that are fun to rewatch. He is a versatile actor with impeccable comedic timing and the ability to deliver dramatically makes him a truly unique presence. There are tons more we didn’t mention, but this list is a good entry point for anyone wanting to become a bigger fan.
