Did Kevin Feige just confirm we’re not getting ‘WandaVision’ season 2?

At this point, it’s safe to say WandaVision has been a success. Unless something goes horribly wrong in the remaining two episodes, the MCU’s phase 4 is off to a fantastically bizarre start. WandaVision has been unlike anything we’ve seen in the MCU before and it’s kept its audience on the hook for seven weeks already. Who isn’t trying to figure out what’s really going on in Westview?

So what happens in two weeks, once the show is over? Yeah, sure, we know The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will take over WandaVision’s weekly Disney+ duties, but that’s not what we’re all wondering. What we want to know is if there’s going to be a second season of Wanda & Vision’s adventures.

There’s a man who holds the answers to most MCU-related questions: Kevin Feige. Feige’s known as the puppet master behind the MCU, keeping it all together, making sure all the talent is going in the same direction. He’s also known for being pretty coy when it comes to disclosing information about the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future. So what did he have to say about a potential WandaVision season 2?

Definitely maybe

One of Kevin Feige’s talents is his ability to be straight-forward while also remaining pretty vague. He used that superpower at a virtual Television Critics Association panel, when asked about the future of WandaVision: “I’ve been at Marvel too long to say a definite no or yes to anything.” Feige added that any WandaVision season 2 plans would be “dictated by the story” of Marvel’s future series and films.

We already know Elizabeth Olsen is going to appear in the next Doctor Strange movie so, in a way, we have an idea of where WandaVision is leading – at least for Wanda. This fluidity between TV shows & movies seems to be something the MCU is aiming for going forward. As Feige said in the TCA panel: “Sometimes [a show] will go into a season 2, and sometimes it will go into a movie and then back into a series.”

That’s not to say some of the new MCU projects aren’t being planned with a slightly more traditional setup in mind. When speaking about the upcoming She-Hulk & Moon Knight TV shows, Feige said Marvel is “keeping in mind a structure that will lead into a season 2 or 3 [on those shows], more than a show like WandaVision that clearly goes into a future film.”

Of course, for a WandaVision season 2 to exist, Vision would have to survive the current season. That’s not a certainty at the moment and, given the show’s penchant to deliver surprises & twists on every episode, we don’t even really know if he’s even actually been alive for the past seven weeks. Then again, it’s the MCU. We could get a new Vision much in the same way we seem to have gotten a new Quicksilver.

Feige is correct in saying WandaVision doesn’t feel like the kind of high-concept that could survive a long run. With two episodes to go, it already looks like the Family Sitcom gimmick has run through all its possible versions (anybody has any idea what a 2010 sitcom is supposed to look like?). If WandaVision were ever to return for a second season, it would probably have to reinvent itself.

By the way, Feige dropped an intriguing bit of info at that TCA panel. He said most Disney+ Marvel shows will encompass about six hours of content per season, “whether that’s six episodes, like in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, or nine episodes like WandaVision.” The math is easy when it comes to Sam & Bucky: six hours divided by six episodes equals six one-hour episodes.

Things get a little trickier when we look at episode runtimes in WandaVision so far and put them alongside Feige’s statement. Six hours is 360 minutes, which averages to forty-minute episodes if you’re looking at a nine-episode season. But most WandaVision episodes range between twenty-seven to thirty-five minutes, with the longest clocking at thirty-eight. Are we looking at a super-sized WandaVision finale or is Feige’s math off?
