Vamoosh and Support Dogs Issue Fireworks Safety Tips for Dogs This Bonfire Night

With Bonfire Night fast approaching, fireworks season can be an incredibly stressful time for dogs and their owners, with loud bangs, flashing lights and unfamiliar noises leaving many pets feeling frightened and anxious. To help owners prepare, British household cleaning brand Vamoosh and national assistance dog charity Support Dogs have come together to share six practical tips on how to keep dogs calm, comfortable and safe throughout fireworks season.

Vamoosh and Support Dogs have compiled six practical tips on how to keep dogs calm, comfortable and safe throughout fireworks season, starting with these three measures that address common triggers. The first tip is to walk before dark. Take your dog for a walk before it gets dark and fireworks are likely to begin, helping them feel calmer and more relaxed for the evening. The second tip is to close curtains and blinds to block out flashing lights from fireworks to help reduce visual disturbances that can unsettle dogs during celebrations. The third tip is to create some background noise by playing relaxing music or having the television on to help mask the sound of fireworks outside and provide a more peaceful indoor setting for pets.

The partners continue their advice with three further steps focused on distraction, comfort and security to support canine wellbeing amid the seasonal noise and lights. The fourth tip is to keep them occupied. Distract your dog with their favourite toys, puzzle feeders, Kongs or snuffle mats to help keep their attention away from the noise. The fifth tip is to create a safe space. Make sure your dog has a quiet, comfortable place at home where they can relax or retreat if they feel frightened by unexpected sounds. The sixth tip is to secure your home. Frightened dogs may try to run away, so ensure doors, windows and other potential escape routes are secure to prevent any sudden escapes.

Vamoosh’s love for dogs has been at the heart of the brand since its beginnings, with its original Pet Hair Dissolver inspired by co-founder Tom Abbey’s black Labrador, Mr Chips. That passion continues today through its partnership with Support Dogs, with Vamoosh and Support Dogs recently celebrating a £27,000 fundraising milestone towards the training of sponsored Labrador puppy Mooshie, who is working towards becoming a fully qualified assistance dog. Together they remain committed to raising awareness of canine wellbeing and helping dogs and their owners through such practical advice shared with pet-loving households each year.
