BTS’s Suga gets surgery: How long will he be out of commission?

The Korean boy band BTS is having a big year. They’ve been breaking one record after another. First, the music video for their single “Dynamite” crossed 100 million views on its debut day alone. Now, it has gone on to garner 500 million views, becoming the fastest Korean outfit to achieve this feat.

The song also debuted at number 1 on the music streaming giant Spotify’s daily Global Top 50 chart, registering 7.778 million streams on its debut day, dethroning Taylor Swift from her previous record of 7.7742 million streams for “Cardigan.”

The band members recently also walked into wealth as their record label – Big Hit Entertainment – went public in a highly successful IPO & gifted each member 68,385  shares. Now, they’re preparing for the much-anticipated launch of their upcoming album BE.

Suga gets surgery

Earlier this month, in the midst of the celebratory air, it was announced through an official statement that Suga has undergone surgery for a torn shoulder labrum on November 3. He had been struggling with this physical health due to a shoulder injury that dates back to before the BTS debut. Later he suffered a shoulder dislocation in 2013 & a posterior labral tear of his left shoulder in 2019.

But he was committed to the projects & to the BTS fan – the ARMY – so he only got into surgery when the symptoms aggravated to an unbearable magnitude, including an inability to raise arms & sudden waves of pain. He made sure he went in for surgery after shooting & creating the album BE.

In the aftermath of the surgery, Yoongi aka Suga is supposed to “undergo a strict & unhindered period of recovery.” This period of recovery means that it’ll be a while before Suga is able to see his fans again. He won’t be participating in the promotional events for the album either.

Jimin has the tea

Concept shots for the album have been doing the rounds on social media, because the photos look very recognizably BTS, but simultaneously give a very different, novel vibe from the band members. The band has got their fans hooked.

In a recent interview, Jimin shared that Suga is recovering well & implores the fans not to worry too much. He shared that Suga gives them updates on his health & recovery status. He added, “The surgery went well. He’s saying that he misses all of you. I hope you can wish for his speedy recovery with me too.” There’s no love lost in the BTS universe.

He also explained why this was the best time for Suga to seek medical attention, “Suga decided to get the treatment early before his health got worse because he wants to be with you for a very long time. If you wait just a little bit, you’ll see him back and healthy soon.” By the looks of it, Suga should recover in the time that the BE album sets out to make & break records.

BTS ARMY living up to their name

In his official message to the fans, Suga shared that he’s “very aware of how concerned and worried the fans must be, and knows how sad the fans must feel.” Seeing as he won’t be able to share space with them through recovery, he has asked his fans to wait for him to be back & support the band in the meantime.

He explained, “Please understand this time as being my chance to prepare to meet you again and healthy, and even if I must be away for a short while, please wait for me to come back to you.” The fans have reciprocated all the concern & love, too. They’ve been posting good wishes for s speedy recovery & encouraging messages with captions like, “We’ll always be here waiting for you”
