The new Netflix comedy 'Space Force' is currently in production with an all-star cast and lots of potential. Here's what we know.

What’s ‘Space Force’ and why should I care?

Fans of The Office have something to live for again. Steve Carell has a new workplace comedy coming out on Netflix in 2020. Carell has once again teamed up with The Office developer and executive producer Greg Daniels, to co-create Space Force. The new Netflix comedy is currently in production with an all-star cast and lots of potential.

Where have I heard Space Force before?

The title of Space Force was ripped right from the headlines. In June 2018 President Trump proposed a “Space Force”, as a new division of the military. Ever since the vague announcement was made, there have been theories around the 6th military unit, whose goal isn’t distinguished beyond “to undertake missions and operations in the rapidly evolving space domain”.

Because if we don’t laugh, we might cry, Crrell and Daniels have capitalized on the confusion around a new military branch, with their new series Space Force. They didn’t even need to change the plotline to make it into a comedy.

The teaser’s text reads: “On June 18th, 2018, the federal government announced the creation of a sixth major division of the United States Armed Forces. The goal of the new branch is ‘to defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks. Or something. This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.”

We’re over the moon for the cast

Steve Carell is taking the lead of Space Force, playing General Mark R. Naird, the man tasked with leading the new military branch. Naird is tasked with getting “boots on the moon by 2024”. He’s compiled a team hotter than Venus to join the force.

John Malkovich (Bird Box) plays Dr. Adrian Mallory, Head Science Advisor. Mallory is brilliant, arrogant and hoping to prevent space from becoming the next great international battlefield.

Ben Schwartz (Parks and Rec) portrays F. Tony Scarapiducci, a self-centered media consultant whose Machiavellian goals only sometimes line up with those of Mark or Space Force.

Diana Silvers (Booksmart) is Erin Naird. Popular A-student in Washington DC, Erin is Mark’s daughter, and an outcast in Wild Horse Colorado after transferring to a remote military base and turns to delinquency.

Tawny Newsome (Bajillion Dollar Properties) plays Angela Ali. Helicopter pilot, ambitious and competitive, with secret dreams that she keeps close to the vest.

Jimmy O. Yang (Crazy Rich Asians) recurs as Doctor Chan Kaifang. Doctor Mallory’s right-hand man, Chan is a brilliant astrophysicist and rocket engineer who immigrated from China as a teenager and loves all things American, from fly fishing to the Baltimore Orioles.

Alex Sparrow (Unreal) is Yuri “Bobby” Telatovich. A charming observer from the Russian Government, Yuri is curious about many things in Mark’s life, like his daughter, or the tech specs of the Javelin missile.

Additionally, Don Lake (Zootopia) plays Brad Gregory. Mark R. Naird’s gatekeeper and assistant, Brad is actually a one-star general in his own right.

Space Force’s all-star cast has us all fired up for the new comedy. While we only have 2020 for a release date so far, check back with Film Daily for updates on the promising new comedy.
