‘Lovecraft Country’ is award-winning so why didn’t HBO renew for season 2?
For some odd reason, Lovecraft Country season 2 isn’t happening. Fans are extremely put off by the fact that this show was so well received, yet hasn’t been signed for a second season. As shocking as this might sound, the show has pulled in eighteen Emmy nominations!
Maybe if they only earned a couple nominations, this devastating blow wouldn’t be so serious. Eighteen nominations is too many to ignore and fans are questioning why the show’s not getting the respect it’s due. Lovecraft Country season 2 isn’t happening unfortunately and here’s what we know.
HBO’s statement
According to Deadline, HBO released a statement saying, “We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country. We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast & crew, and Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”
HBO didn’t necessarily give an explanation for why they’re doing what they’re doing . . . They just let the world know that this is what’s happening. It would be a lot more helpful if HBO provided some context or reasoning for why they’ve decided to cancel the show.
Lovecraft Country season 2 hopes
Misha Green had a vision for Lovecraft Country season 2 and before she knew there wouldn’t be a renewal, she opened up about her thoughts. She said to Deadline, “I envision a second season that carries on the spirit of Matt Ruff’s novel by continuing to reclaim the genre storytelling space that people of color have typically been left out of.”
Her vision for what was to come in Lovecraft Country season 2 would have been amazing to see play out on our TV screens. It’s such a bummer she won’t be able to execute her plans.
Where else can you see the cast?
Since Lovecraft Country season2 won’t be on its way to us, it’s still possible to catch the cast in other roles they’ve landed over the years. Jurnee Smollett is the leading lady you’ll be able to see in movies like Birds of Prey: Harley Quinn and Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.
Jonathan Majors is another star from the show who you can catch in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania once it is released in 2023. For now, his roles already existing include Loki, Da 5 Bloods, and The Last Black Man in San Francisco.
Wunmi Mosaku can be spotted in Loki, His House, and I Am Slave. Abbey Lee Kershaw has starred in other roles like The Neon Demon, Elizabeth Harvest, and Mad Max: Fury Road.
Lovecraft Country season 2 plot
If Lovecraft Country season 2 was actually happening, there’s a lot more magical mysteries we would’ve been able to see unfold. According to ScreenRant, the second season would’ve been called Lovecraft Country: Supremacy following a new generation of characters living in a world several years past everything that happened in season one.
It would’ve been highly possible for Atticus & Leti’s son to be the main character as well. Fans are keeping their fingers crossed Misha Green will provide more details about what the second season was supposed to look like at some point, but for now, she hasn’t revealed too much.
The first season did a great job following the novel by Matt Ruff, aside from some changes here & there. One of the major changes was gender-swapping the main villain. Since they chose to gender-swap the villain, we were able to have Abbey Lee Kershaw in the cast which makes that change worthwhile. Hopefully, more answers about what season 2 would’ve looked like will be released to the public.
