Will there be a season 2? Why you need to watch ‘Ragnarok’

If your knowledge of Ragnarok ends at Thor, you’ve been missing out. The angsty post-apocalyptic series about teens who may have stumbled upon a fight between the gods under the Norwegian sky is quickly addictive. 

Forget about Thor (but not completely). The term “Ragnarok” refers to the old Norse legend about the end of the world, with natural disasters leading to a battle between the gods and giants in the Norweigan sky. The Netflix series Ragnarok brings a new approach to a mythology story. After season 1, we’re all left wondering . . . will there be a season 2?

Where Ragnarok begins

As we begin our Ragnarok adventure, the awkward teen Magne (David Stakston) and his younger brother Laurits (Jonas Strand Gravli) return to their birthplace, the town of Edda, things start to get weird. When Magne tries to help an old man in a scooter, a strange woman approaches him and touches his forehead. 

From that moment, something seems to awaken in Magne. That day, he looks up at the Norweigan sky on a clear day and correctly predicts a sudden rainstorm. We soon find that Magne’s glasses have become unnecessary and that he may be developing superhuman strength, speed, and stamina as well. 

Ragnarok’s Magne and Laurits are in the same grade at school, despite their age difference. Magne has been held back by dyslexia, and Laurits is a bit of a prodigy. Magne instantly connects with a new friend, Isolde (Ylva Bjørkaas Thedin), a passionate environmentalist who has been creating YouTube videos about how climate change is affecting their town’s natural beauty. 

Isolde is specifically worried about the glacier on the local mountain range, which she suspects is melting due to the warm winter. Magne and Isolde’s trip to inspect the glacier ends with a shocking tragedy, inciting a whole new drama.

Ragnarok: A ton of potential

Ragnarok brings an entertaining twist to the story of Thor and the Viking gods, giving it relevance to the modern-day climate change global issue. We may actually be in love with the backdrop of the cloudy Norweigan sky and fjords. 

There’s a lot going on in Ragnarok. Magne is navigating new abilities, a new school, new friends, and a new love interest, all while investigating the company where his mother is employed, Jutul Industries.

While the pacing of Ragnarok does get a little jumpy, and we are hungry for more supernatural action, there is a lot to get into with the 6 episode series. We have some high hopes that the short first season is setting up for a much more action-packed second. 

Will there be a Ragnarok season 2?

As season 1 released on January 31st, Netflix still has not confirmed a Ragnarok season 2, though the show definitely has garnered a following, with just the trailer viewed over 4 million times. Netflix is always tight-lipped about their content’s performance, but What’s On Netflix listed the series as one of the streaming giant’s top ten performers. 

While we don’t anticipate viewing a second season before 2021, there are still a lot of stories to be told in Ragnarok. Climate change, capitalism, conspiracy theories, and superpowers are a combination that needs more airtime. We were completely enthralled with where this story can go and have big expectations for Ragnarok season 2. We just hope Netflix doesn’t make us wait forever.
