PTAFF’s Mental Health Film Festival celebrates 10th anniversary

The Pembroke Taparelli Arts & Film Festival marks its tenth year with a three-day event focused on mental health. Scheduled for November 6 through 8, 2026, the gathering takes place at The KULT LA in downtown Los Angeles. Programming links independent films, performances, visual art, and discussions that tie personal mental wellbeing to broader themes of social justice and community support.

Founder and executive director Michelle Andrea Meshel Smith reflected on the milestone. “For ten years, PTAFF has created space for artists whose work asks us to see one another more fully,” she stated. She added that mental health affects families, creative lives, and communities, making the anniversary a chance to explore these topics through art and mutual care.

The opening night on Friday begins at 6:30 p.m. with a reception prepared by Chef Q of CHEFISM. Film screenings start at 7:30 p.m. The feature presentation, Crownsville Hospital: From Lunacy to Legacy, examines the past of Maryland’s Crownsville State Mental Hospital and raises issues around racial injustice, institutional responsibility, and dignity in mental healthcare. It is preceded by the short film Someone Loves You, written and directed by Victoria Kostadaras and Amanda Mandii. This work depicts a Jamaican-American family dealing with mental illness, relationship tensions, and unspoken generational patterns. The directors will participate remotely in a discussion after the screening. The pair of films bridge personal family caregiving with the wider record of care institutions.

PTAFF’s four panels will explore the responsibilities of storytellers, the wellbeing of creative professionals, and the choices facing families and communities. The Cost of the Spotlight: Mental Health, Suicide Prevention & the Working Artist examines the pressures of creative careers and practical support for artists, including preparation, boundaries, and care around emotionally demanding performances. What We Put on Screen: Mental Health Storytelling, Representation & the Duty of Care explores how film and television shape public understanding of mental illness and the responsibilities that accompany those portrayals. When Help Is Refused: Autonomy, Family, Crisis & the Ethics of Intervention addresses individual rights, family concerns, crisis response, and pathways to care. Before the Breaking Point: Building Community Mental Health Before Crisis considers culturally responsive services, peer support, youth engagement, housing stability, and community-based approaches to wellbeing.

Panelists include Michelle Kotval, Litigation Counsel in Disability Rights California’s Mental Health Practice Group, whose advocacy addresses mental health, housing, and disability rights; producer Carol Ann Shine; community organizer Asia Medley; and Cynthia M. A. Siadat, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker whose work emphasizes sustainable self-care, burnout, and mental health recovery.

The festival extends its reach through youth programming, curated exhibitions, and live performances in addition to the core screenings and panels. Friday’s youth screening will spotlight films from Kids in the Spotlight, giving young audiences an opportunity to engage with stories told by emerging filmmakers. An art exhibition curated by Khindra Nicole, performances by Artivism Dance Theatre, and poetry featuring Sean Raymond Hill and Charlene E. Green will extend the festival’s themes through visual art, movement, and spoken word. Sunday’s closing program will feature competitive film awards and 10th anniversary recognition, followed by a community healing activation offering space for reflection and connection.
