If you look at me
This emotional scene encapsulates what it feels like to be known. Lately, the internet has taken to saying “I feel seen” when someone seems to understand them personally. But this part of Portrait of a Lady on Fire truly demonstrates how unnerving, beautiful, and intense it can be to truly be known and seen.
I thought of you
This scene is of course very satisfying to viewers. The moment when Héloïse and Marianne come together to spend the night with each other. It’s sweet, tender, and slightly desperate.
I believed you braver
A sad scene where the two leading ladies wrestle with their feelings as well as their lots in life.
First kiss
A secret kiss stolen by the shore where nobody can see. Truly romantic.
How do we know when it’s finished?
Urgent and reluctant all at once – a heart-wrenching scene to watch.
The end
Of course, the end of Portrait of a Lady on Fire is powerful and emotional in its own way.
