Patio furniture can be tricky to keep clean. Here are some cleaning tips on how to keep the cushions looking spotless.

Cleaning Tips for Patio Furniture Cushions Depending on Types

The procedure you will adopt to clean your patio furniture will depend on the type of furniture you have outdoors. You can either opt for the DIY way or seek assistance from professionals to carry out the same.

However, when it comes to cleaning the cushions and covers of your patio furniture, you can do it all by yourself without having to shell out money for a professional service provider. Just follow these steps and you will have done the cleaning all by yourself in no time.

A stepwise guide to cleaning your patio furniture cushions and covers

You will require the following tools and substances for the cleaning process-

  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Vacuum
  • Garden hose
  • Towels
  • Borax
  • Protector spray for the fabrics
  • Dishwasher liquid
  • Scrubbing brush

Removing the cases from the cushions

First of all, you must take out the cushion covers from the patio furniture. Keep the pillows or cushions in a heap and keep them aside. If you wash them in the machine, you must always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Different materials have different care instructions and hence it is important to take note.

Use a vacuum cleaner for the cushions

Dust off any loose dirt and dust from the cushions. Make sure you have removed dirt from the folds and crevices too.

Change the attachment of the vacuum cleaner so that the buttons do not create any hitch. Also, the buttons will remain intact if you use the appropriate attachments.

Hand-wash the cushions followed by soaking in dish soap

Make a solution that is made up of a bucket of warm- water and one tablespoon of dishwashing soap.

You will require borax in case you want to treat cushions that have collected mildew. With the help of a sponge, apply the solution to the cushions and allow them to remain soaked for at least 15 minutes to half an hour.

Remember, the amount of solution that you must apply will depend on the amount of dirt that has collected on the cushions. Find out whether or not there are dirt spots still on your cushions. And if you do see them, scrub it off with the brush.

Use the garden hose for rinsing

You can hose off the patio cushions but do not apply too much pressure as the fabric might get damaged.

Air-dry the patio furniture cushions after towel drying

Wrap the cushions with a dry towel so that the extra water gets soaked into the towel. Keep all the cushions separately at a distance from each other. Not a single drop of moisture must be present in the cushions because it might lead to regrowth of mildew.

Invest in a fabric protector

Lastly, once the cushions are dry, spray them with a fabric protector.

The patio furniture covers have to be taken care of even more because they are always subjected to elements and suffer a lot of harsh weather conditions.
