Everything you need to know about ‘Outlander’ S5
Our favorite time-traveling drama Outlander returns this February, as Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) attempt to rebuild their lives together in pre-revolutionary America.
Following a doozy of a cliffhanger at the end of its fourth season, and having been off the air for months, Outlander owes a lot to its fans in the upcoming episodes. Here to answer our prayers, Starz released an official trailer for season 5 last week, and we’re dying over the tumultuous new challenges Jamie and Claire must face.
Oh, and we’re totally here for more of the steamy intimate bits as well. And, like, the sexiness of female pleasure and consent, as we’ve pointed out before. The streaming release of S5 of Outlander is fast approaching, and here’s what we know about the upcoming season thus far.
When will Outlander S5 be released?
Season 5 of Outlander will begin airing weekly on February 16, 2020, with 12 new episodes.
What’s going on in S5?
Sticking to its one-book-per-season formula, the fifth season of Outlander will be based on the fifth novel in Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling series, The Fiery Cross.
The upcoming season will kick off soon after the cliffhanger finale of S4—which saw Jamie receiving an order from Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) to find and kill his godfather, Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix). While Jamie is torn, he knows that if he doesn’t follow the behest of Tryon, he could lose his land grant and everything he’s accomplished thus far in the New World.
Furthermore, Jamie and Claire’s decision to remain in the New World is certainly not without peril. The looming Revolutionary War will be a dramatic factor in the season, not only in heralding the birth of the American nation but also in testing how far Jamie and Claire are willing to go to protect their newfound home.
What will happen between Jamie and Roger?
Roger (Richard Rankin) and Jamie’s relationship in S4 was fraught, especially after Jamie brutally beat his son-in-law following a case of mistaken identity. However, in S5 fans will get to see Roger evolve as a new husband and father.
Who stars in Outlander S5?
Returning are Caitriona Balfe (Claire), Sam Heughan (Jamie), Sophie Skelton (Brianna, Claire and Jamie’s daughter), and Richard Rankin (Roger).
Other cast members returning in S5 will include: Duncan Lacroix (Murtagh), David Berry (Lord John Grey), Maria Doyle Kennedy (Jocasta), Ed Speleers (Stephen Bonnet), Tim Downie (Governor William Tryon), and Chris Donald (Phillip Wylie).
Additionally, new characters will be added based on the events in The Fiery Cross. Named so far are Paul Gorman, playing twins Josiah and Kezzie Beardsley, and Bronwyn James as Fanny Beardsley.
Where is S5 filmed?
Spoiler alert: Fraser’s Ridge isn’t really in North Carolina. The entire season is filmed in Scotland, which doubles for North America.
Where can I watch Outlander S5?
The new season of Outlander will air on Starz and Starz app. It will also be available to stream through Amazon and Hulu for an additional price.
Finally the best news of all—it won’t end with S5
Outlander has already been picked up for a sixth season by the CEO of Starz, Chris Albrecht.
