Ecommerce sales increased 32.4%, reaching $791.70 billion in 2020, according to Digital Commerce 360 analysts. The pandemic has created an extra $105.47 billion in ecommerce revenue, and according to analysts online sales, retail sales reached $4.04 trillion last year.

The pandemic has been the vehicle of change in the way we work, shop, and interact. Ecommerce has been flourishing as many consumers started new hobbies or completed DIY projects. Home Depot, and Amazon Seller have seen a boom in online growth. Below, we take a closer look. 

Home Depot

Home Depot reported sales increasing an estimated 24% during the third-quarter, compared to a year ago. Home Depot’s annual sales added up to $132.11 billion. It’s main competitor, Lowe’s, reached $89.6 billion in annual sales for the same time period. 

The growth is largely attributable to the strong home-improvement trend sent in motion by the pandemic. Richard McPhail, Home Depot’s finance chief, confirmed that “The strong and consistent demand environment we’ve seen over the past nine months has continued into February.”

The retail giant, Amazon, has seen it’s revenue grow approximately 37%, compared to the 2019 fiscal year. Amazon’s chief financial officer, Brian Olsavsky, confirmed the strong growth was fueled by a “strong demand across all its major product categories.”

The Home & Kitchen category boasts an impressive 40% of sellers with products listed in this category. Clothing, Shoes, and Jewelry has a shared 10th place with Pet Supplies at 13% of product listings.

With the strong growth of online shopping, consumers are faced with a growing concern: online scams. According to the FBI cyber crimes cost the American public an estimated $4.2 billion in losses. The FBI reported an increase of 69% over the last year with regard to complaints received relating to cybercrime. 

Shoppers can protect themselves from scams with these easy steps

  • Take a closer look at the URL. Most of us will use a search engine to find websites.Take a closer look at the address bar to ensure you are on the right webpage. Take note of any misspellings or typos. Re-type the URL manually when in doubt. 
  • Look for a padlock in the address bar. Clicking on the padlock in the address bar will open a dropdown menu with valuable information about valid certificates, number of cookies in use and other site settings. The pandemic proved to be a stimulus for growth, especially in the online shopping sector. Working from home has helped to grow e-commerce and the DIY sector and it shows no signs of slowing down. In this rapidly evolving digital world, consumers have more choices than before when it comes to shopping, products and services. The world is evolving and in these exciting times, we need to stay vigilant to protect ourselves from online scams. 

The home improvement and online shopping trend has continued strongly into the current year. It is not unreasonable to think that this trend might be here to stay as more and more business migrate to the digital world.
