Has Keanu Reeves’s ‘The Matrix 4’ got a release date yet?
The film that revolutionized sci-fi action has been resurrected!
At CinemaCon, Warner Bros. revealed a series of trailers for their slate of new films coming out in the fourth quarter of this year. They showed footage from Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho, James Wan’s Malignant, The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark, as well as the Robert Pattinson-led The Batman.
Perhaps most impressive, however, was a presentation of the first trailer for the fourth The Matrix film. Very little was known about this film other than the fact that Keanu Reeves would return to star. In fact not even the title had previously been leaked. We now know that the fourth film will be called The Matrix: Resurrections and it will arrive in theaters & HBO Max this Christmas.
The trailer
While the trailer for the upcoming Matrix film has not yet been uploaded to the internet many in attendance at CinemaCon have shared the juicy details.
In the trailer, we see Keanu Reeves in therapy. His therapist, played by Neil Patrick Harris, refers to him as Thomas Anderson, the name he had before he became Neo in The Matrix. Thomas complains of vivid dreams that blend into & confuse his reality. It appears he has no memory of the Matrix.
He later runs into a woman, played by Carrie-Ann Moss, in a coffee shop. While they both seem to notice a strange attraction to one another, the two don’t remember each other. Thomas is then seen taking blue pills, a reference to his choice between the red & blue pills from the first film.
A mysterious man, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, offers Thomas a red pill, and then the illusion of reality is lifted. In the footage that follows, the audience is treated to the sort of action scenes we have come to expect from The Matrix franchise. Neo is seen fighting in a dojo & using his mastery of the powers of The Matrix. The film ends with Thomas’ therapist saying that he is going back to where it all began.
Those who saw the trailer say that the new film has a visual style all it’s own, trading the first three film’s crisp visuals for a grainier, almost retro style. It has also been said that the footage was met with enthusiasm by the crowd in attendance.
In or out
Lana Wachowski is back to direct, write, and produce The Matrix: Resurrections. She made the first three films with her sister Lily. The sisters have largely begun working on their own projects individually since Jupiter Ascending and the second season of Sense8.
Keanu Reeves will return to star in the new film. He is said to have his long hair & beard that have become his current trademark since the mid 2010s. Keanu Reeves has been staying busy since he re-emerged as a leading man after 2014’s John Wick. He will reprise that role in two films that are currently being shot back-to-back. He also wrote a comic called BRZRKR that was released this year with a Netflix adaptation on the way.
Carrie-Anne Moss will also return to the franchise, reprising her role as Trinity. She recently appeared in Jessica Jones and several other Marvel series as Jeri Hogarth, as well as a detective in The Bye Bye Man. Jada Pinkett Smith and Lambert Wilson are also set to reprise their roles as Niobe and The Merovingian respectively.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Neil Patrick Harris are newcomers to the cast. Sense8 alums Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt, Eréndira Ibarra, and Brian J. Smith are also on the cast. Swiss actor & martial artist Daniel Bernhardt is credited as Agent Johnson. Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving do not appear to be returning for Resurrections.
