If you’re one of the people who adore Legally Blonde, then you likely heard a few years ago a third movie was in the works. However, ever since then there hasn’t been another peep about the potential project – which has left fans believing the movie was either abandoned or stuck in Hollywood limbo.

If you thought you were destined to rewatch Legally Blonde & Legally Blonde 2, and listen to the musical soundtrack on repeat for the rest of eternity with no new content to ever be added to the franchise, today is your lucky day. More news of the future Legally Blonde 3 movie has broken, and it looks like the movie is inching ever closer to pre-production.

Comedy actress Mindy Kaling, best known for her roles in The Office and The Mindy Project, has been signed on as one of the writers of Legally Blonde 3’s future script. However, this is most certainly not her first foray into writing. She wrote twenty-five of the episodes on her show The Mindy Project and multiple episodes of The Office too.

Alongside Kaling will be Dan Goor, the beloved writer for Parks and Rec and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Goor’s sitcoms are known for their heart and creative humor, so he’s likely an excellent fit for the movie.

Reese Witherspoon, who will continue to play our beloved Elle Woods, has previously worked with Kaling on the movie A Wrinkle in Time where they both starred as powerful and magical beings. Kaling has also been a long known super fan of the Legally Blonde franchise, even going as far as to dress up as Elle Woods at one point.

Reese Witherspoon was the one to break the news about the new development in the Legally Blonde 3 movie. She took to Instagram and posted a picture of Kaling dressed as Elle beside a still from the original movie. She captioned the photo saying, “Great news alert!! Some things are just meant to be!😜I’m SOOO excited to have @MindyKaling and #DanGoor writing Legally Blonde 3! 💖💫This is #ElleWoodsApproved!💯”

News of this movie couldn’t have come at a better time. The original movie was an empowering film, which told young girls (and adult women) that femininity didn’t mean stupidity. With the current social climate Legally Blonde 3 has the potential to remind original watchers of this sage lesson, and also bring in a new generation of young adults unafraid to be unapologetically smart, while wearing the latest fashion in high heels.
