There are some names over the years that show up as partners to each other: Scarlett Johansson & Chris Evans, Ryan Murphy & Darren Criss, Dwayne Johnson & Kevin Hart, Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio. You see the picture that’s forming here, right? Well, production has finally begun on the new movie of the director & actor dynamic duo, Killers of the Flower Moon.
Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio have had a long, fruitful history of films together. Like, seriously, you can do a movie marathon and have the marathon last a decent amount of time. So what is Killers of the Flower Moon about? What can we expect from Martin Scorsese’s new movie? Who else is in the film? What is Killers of the Flower Moon about?
Based off of the non-fiction book by David Grann, Killers of the Flower Moon is based on a true crime case. In the 1920s in Osage County, Oklahoma, there were a series of murders of the wealthy Osage Nation, who got the wealth due to big oil deposits being discovered underneath their land. The Osage Nation were awarded custody rights to the oil in the court, which means they got the $$$$ from sales of the oil deposits.
Of course, however, people who want the oil (read: white people) don’t like the idea of dealing with the “middle man” of the Osage Nation. There’s a lot of complicated stuff about the custodianship and how the Osage rarely saw the money that they were owed. The plot gets even more complicated when, well, murder gets involved. It’s one of the biggest early cases for the nascent FBI, who was in its infancy for the Osage case.
The official body count is twenty Osage people were murdered in the plot, but Grann believes that the count could be in the hundreds – all murdered due to their ties to the oil. Cattleman William Hale was eventually tried & convicted as the mastermind behind the crime after the investigation.
Who is in Killers of the Flower Moon?
Leonardo DiCaprio, obviously, stars as the son of a powerful local rancher, William Hale, who is played by Robert De Niro. Lily Gladstone, known for her breakout role in Certain Women, plays his wife in the film, which is her highest profile acting role to date. Killers of the Flower Moon see Scorsese & DiCaprio working together for the first time since 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street.
In the supporting cast, we have Jesse Plemons, Scott Shepherd, Pat Healy, Tantoo Cardinal, Michael Abbott Jr, Gary Basaraba, and Grammy Award-winning musicians Jason Isbell and Sturghill Simpson. Eric Roth penned the screenplay for the adaptation of the non-fiction book from Grann. Paramount Pictures & Apple TV+ are set to distribute the film, which began filming in April 2021 after a year-long delay.
When will the new Martin Scorsese movie be released?
Right now, we don’t have a release window for Killers of the Flower Moon. Due to COVID-19, filming, as we said, was delayed for a year. It was supposed to begin in March 2020 in Oklahoma, but, well, plans definitely changed, huh? Assuming that filming for the new Martin Scorsese movie goes smoothly? We’re guessing a 2022 release?
Although, who knows, maybe they’ll squeak it in under the wire for awards season. We’re not going to guess on that front too much. Either way, Killers of the Flower Moon will definitely promise to be something interesting to delve into.
