Rock M. Sakura to Widow VonDu: ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ newbies, pt. 4
So here we are, with only three queens left to introduce. The 13 queens vying for the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar on RuPaul’s Drag Race have come from far and wide. There’s the first French queen, a queen whose fans include Adele and J Law, and a queen who’s been strutting since she was 15.
We’ve met nearly everyone, except Rock M. Sakura, Sherry Pie, and Widow VonDu. These three final queens maybe last, but they are definitely not least. With only three queens to get to know, let’s finish meeting Drag Race’s newest competitors and read the competition.
Rock M. Sakura (San Francisco, CA)
If you thought Nicky Dolls seemed like a weeb, get ready until you meet Rock M. Sakura. The “anime J-pop manga queen” gets her name from Sakura in Naruto Shippuden, proving she’s not afraid to show off her nerdy love. Already we love the confidence Rock radiates.
The first Bay Area queen since Season 5, Rock brings the weird and niche that San Fran drag is known for to the show once again. While Rock definitely has a distinct look, she isn’t the kind of queen who will box herself in. She’s got the energy to put on a good show, and she’s definitely a people person.
In her reveal video, Rock mentions she’s worried about the critiques as she’s put a lot of love and care into her persona and doesn’t want to see her get sent home. With the bubbly personality, she’s shown us, it’s no surprise she’s a softy inside and out. But she looks as bubbly as she acts and that’s our kind of gal.
Sherry Pie (NYC, NY)
With a figure that reminds of you the Mrs. Butterworth bottle, it’s clear Sherry Pie finds herself drawn to the ’50s in her style. Considering her name came from the most popular female name in the ’50s, she’s got a knack for the decade. A campy queen who likes a bit a glam, Sherry brings a slice of everything on stage with her.
Sherry isn’t afraid of being a bit messy and doing something crazy. Heck, in her intro video, Sherry calls out the queens who decided drag is just modeling and only care about looking pretty. She’s here to play and win, not just be another pretty face. She wants to take the camp and glamour of the past with her to the future.
So often we see queens that try to argue they’re not just a look queen, but Sherry truly shows that she’s more than just that. She admits she’s a bit stuck in the past with her style, though she does add in referential humor from today, but she wants to take that with her into the future. We hope that the future includes a crown and $100,000.
Widow VonDu (Kansas City, MO)
Last but certainly not least, it’s time for the black widow of the group, Widow Von’Du. Consider Widow and black widow spiders are big, black, and dangerous, she knew that had to be her drag name. Von’Du is a combo of Kat Von D and Erykah Badu because of her love of both women.
“A rachet ass queen with high-class fashion”, Widow is the star of the show in Kansas City and wants to be the plus-sized performer big girls want to be. The last thing she wants to do is hide herself behind a gown every week. She also just happens to paint an intimidating face, but that’s far from who Widow is.
If Widow takes the crown, she’s the first big queen to do so, and she hopes to God she does. “A lot of entertainers see me and are like ‘I wanna do that, I wanna be like you’ and I’m like, ‘well f-ing go and do it.’” It’s time for the skinny bitches to quaker in fear of some powerful thunder thighs attached to Widow.
