Coney Island Film Festival returns April 30 to May 2, 2027

The Coney Island Film Festival returns April 30 to May 2, 2027. It brings together independent filmmakers for screenings and events against the backdrop of the iconic Coney Island neighborhood.

Filmmakers interested in submitting their work should note the entry deadlines. The regular deadline falls on Friday, October 23, 2026. A late deadline is set for December 18, 2026, while the final deadline is February 12, 2027.

Submissions are accepted across a wide array of genres and formats. These include narrative features and shorts, documentaries, as well as horror, science fiction, animation, comedy, drama, experimental pieces, and music videos.

The festival has earned notable recognition in the industry. It was named among MovieMaker Magazine's Coolest Film Festivals in the World and one of 25 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee. Additionally, it ranks among FilmFreeway's Top 100 Best-Reviewed Festivals.

There are no premiere requirements for entries. Interested parties can submit through the dedicated portal at https://filmfreeway.com/ConeyIslandFilmFestival.

The festival traces its origins to 2001. That year, the nonprofit Coney Island USA partnered with Rob Leddy of indiefilmpage.com to establish the event as a means to support the arts organization.

Set in Coney Island, the festival benefits from a relaxed and distinctive atmosphere complete with amusement park attractions and parties. Opening night events honor the area's carnival heritage through performances featuring sideshow acts, sword swallowers, fire eaters, and burlesque artists.

Industry voices have praised the event. Christopher Zara of MovieMaker magazine described it as "A showcase worthy of the neighborhood's amusement-rich history." Director Darren Aronofsky stated, "Without a doubt, The Coney Island Film Festival has the greatest location in the world. It also gives out the best trophy I've ever received." Barry Strugatz noted, "The beach, the boardwalk, great stars, great movies, great filmmakers…the Coney Island Film Festival has everything that Cannes has, plus Nathan's hotdogs!"

The 2026 award winners spanned multiple categories. Animation went to Edward. Crowded Out took comedy short honors. Girl | Dad won for drama short. The Pink Velvet Witch received the documentary feature award, while Being BublĂ© earned documentary short. Experimental category recognized Food For Thought. The Pitchfork Retreat won feature. Horror prize went to dont.4get2smile. Made in Coney Island honored The Longest Friday of the Year, Again. Music video winner was PONY UP – Donny McCaslin, and Human Resource took sci-fi.

The event is organized entirely by professionals from film, television, and audiovisual fields. This structure maintains high standards while preserving the independent and irreverent character that sets it apart from other New York City festivals.
