Best Movies for Summer 2021
It can be said with certainty that one of the activities that will never get old is watching movies. There’s no doubt that the entertainment industry has suffered a lot financially over the last two years. Still, it seems like productions around the world are starting to shoot again, and the upcoming movies for summer 2021 look promising.
Although there are a variety of entertainment options nowadays, watching a movie with friends, a partner, or family remains an important ritual for many of us. Scrolling to Instagram, listening to podcasts, having heated debates on Twitter are just some of the entertainment options popular in today’s world.
However, none of those options can truly replace the experience of watching a good movie. The rush, excitement, and rollercoaster of emotions a good movie awakens in us is very unique, and no TikTok trend, Youtube drama, or Twitter feud can replace that.
Probably, the number one reason why people watch movies is for entertainment. But aside from that, there are numerous advantages from watching movies, like:
- Movies help us process difficult life lessons
- Movies can drive social change
- Movies help us learn
Undoubtedly, we can learn a lot about certain moments in time, and some movies can shape the way we view the world we’re living in right now. Movies have always inspired social change, that’s for sure.
Finally, movies have the ability to teach us about experiences outside our own perspective, and they can help us overcome and process some difficult times in life. Needless to say, the movie industry is not going anywhere anytime soon.
#1 The Card Counter
Since the early days of film in Hollywood, movies about casinos and gambling have been a common theme. However, no one knew for sure how much popularity it would get among viewers.
Surprisingly, gambling is becoming a more and more popular theme in the movie world, and people are not mad about it. From the 1931 poker classic “Smart Money” to modern hits like 2019’s “Uncut Gems,” the love for gambling-themed movies is enormous.
Most recently, director Paul Schrader contributed to the world of gambling and casino movies with “The Card Counter.” This movie was supposed to be released in 2020, but a crew member fell sick, and then a pandemic happened, so they had to delay the movie.
With many ups and downs, delays, and deliberation, Paul Schrader finally completed the editing and put out a statement that the movie will be released in June of 2021.
The movie is about a gambler named William Tell, who just wants to play cards, but everything changes when an angry young man, Crick, enters a casino seeking help to execute his plan for revenge on a military colonel. With the help of a wealthy financier La Linda, the trio set their sights on winning the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
As the number of people who gamble increases both in land-based and online casinos, many famous directors are starting to explore the theme of gambling in movies.
#2 Godzilla vs. Kong
Godzilla vs. Kong is the follow-up to 2014’s Godzilla and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. This sci-fi/fantasy movie is full of fights, explosives, and nuclear blasts. In a nutshell, this movie is about the age-old battle between two of the world’s biggest titans.
Godzilla vs. Kong is written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein and directed by Adam Wingard. The long-anticipated blockbuster matchup was released on May 24, 2021, and it brought a lot of mixed opinions and critiques.
The viewer’s opinion about this movie is divided. Some people say that it is the best studio film so far this year, while others think it’s disappointing. One thing is for sure if you came to this movie looking for a fight, then fight is what you shall get.
Seeing two massive CGI creatures beat the crap out of each other is pretty cool, and you’ll definitely have a great time watching it.
If you haven’t seen the first two movies, you will still understand this film. However, it’s recommended, if possible, to separate time to watch the first two before hopping on to the final capper on a franchise Warner Bros.
#3 To All the Boys: Always and Forever
Whether you cringe at the very thought of watching a teen romance movie or whether you get excited, one thing stands, teen romance movies are like no other, and by the looks of it, a lot of people seem to enjoy watching them.
Always and Forever is a rom-com movie about high school sweethearts Peter Kavinsky and Lara Jean Covey entering the spring of their senior year. After fake dating, then being in an off-and-on relationship, the couple is preparing to face their biggest trial of all, college.
Although this movie has many cliche moments, if you are interested in revisiting the past and your teenage years, you should watch it. This movie captures such a specific time in life, a moment when all you have are few goodbyes to say and choices to make.
Oh, wouldn’t it be nice to be seventeen again and have the world at your feet?
