Why does Twitter think Barbie has a girlfriend now? See the tweet

When a childhood icon comes out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community – we get excited! Fans everywhere have now begun speculating that beloved childhood doll Barbie has a girlfriend.

A photo has emerged on Twitter sparking rumors about Barbie’s potential coming out. Here are some of the best reactions and what you need to know.

History of Barbie

Barbie hit the shelves way back in 1959. According to Time, 92% of American girls aged 3-12 have owned a Barbie. Within sixty-two years, Barbie has acquired seventy-two careers and has proven to be an inspiration to young children.

“My whole philosophy of Barbie was that, through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices,” creator Ruth Handler stated about the history of Barbie.

“Ken cheated on me with a Bratz doll.”

Over the years, Barbie & Ken have been the ultimate power couple for young minds everywhere. Even if you didn’t play with a Barbie doll, chances are you knew that Ken was her partner in plastic.

The Mattel doll has been linked with Ken since 1961. Ken was named after Mattel founder’s Ruth & Elliot Handler’s son. Barbie & Ken’s relationship has been shown throughout TV commercials and the accessories we can purchase. In 1974, the first Barbie & Ken townhouse was released including a Jacuzzi.

Of course, as we know, Barbie even became a film star with her role in Toy Story 2 (1999). Unfortunately, it appears the fame became too much for the couple and Mattel announced Barbie & Ken’s split in 2004. Could this have been a clue about Barbie’s sexuality?

Ken & Barbie both appear in Toy Story 3 (2010) which led to Ken’s reunion with Barbie a year later. Mattel advertised the pair’s reunion on billboards. (We’re not kidding.)

Love wins

Barbie has been vlogging and keeping up with the times and fans have fallen more in love with the iconic character. Even those who could be seen as “outgrowing” the toy have discovered a new appreciation for Barbie.

On Twitter, a series of photos of Barbie alongside a female doll as they both wear a t-shirt with the phrase “love wins”. Based on the use of the popular LGBTQ phrase, many fans have been asking: is this Barbie’s girlfriend? We have the answer, and unfortunately, the answer is no.

The mystery doll is actually inspired by musician Aimee Song and the photos have recently resurfaced and became viral. They were actually released in 2017 by Mattel and were released to promote the collab with Aimee Song. Song, who identifies as an LGBTQ+ ally, created the T-shirts to benefit The Trevor Project, which is a non-profit organization that focuses on preventing suicide among LGBTQ+ youth.

Aimee Song has also responded to the viral tweet with the caption “I am the girlfriend.” Barbie & Ken are great, but we’d definitely stan Aimee Song’s doll with Barbie.

Could Barbie be hiding her true sexuality? Fans seem to think so, especially after Ken’s appearance in Toy Story 3 was questioned.

Should we look back at Barbie’s movies to revisit the possibility of her sexuality? Usually, Barbie was also cast alongside a female character and perhaps become part of an iconic ship we didn’t fully understand until now.

What do you think about Barbie’s sexuality? Is Mattel covering up the doll’s true identity? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
