The Anne with an E fandom makes us emotional
Your devotion to Anne with an E gives all of us at Film Daily major feels. Moira Walley-Beckett’s updated version of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables has created an impactful update of the beloved story of Anne Shirley. Providing new insight to Anne’s past and tackling timeless issues in a modern way, Anne with an E has resonated with its YA audience.
Fans of the show can’t help but fight for its continuation. Anne with an E’s cancellation was most likely a result of the termination of the agreement between Netflix and Canada’s CBC. In response, fans are lobbying for any platform to pick up the show, appealing to Disney+, Amazon Prime, and Hulu as well as Netflix and CBC.
More than a period drama
Anne with an E is a coming-of-age story that takes place in the late 19th century and follows the life of teenager Anne Shirley (beautifully portrayed by Amybeth McNulty). When aging siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert (R.H. Thompson and Geraldine James), decide to take on an orphan boy to help out around their ancestral farm of Green Gables, they are mistakenly sent Anne.
The teenager manages to charm the siblings into giving her a try, much as she’s charmed the audience in fighting for her story. As Anne forms a new life in Prince Edward Island, everyone who is lucky enough to cross her path leaves their meeting better than they were before.
