‘Muteki No Hito’ is a script that’s on our radar
XR technology has become much more widely available over the years, with more and more creators trying to adapt to the technology. Whether we’re talking VR headsets, AR apps, or MR interactive experiences, the adaptation of this technology has become widespread.
But there’s still people innovating the game further, by using the medium for purposes not meant for it. No Longer Human is making a name for herself by becoming the first XR screenwriter in Japan. Known for directing music videos, this is a huge jump for No Longer Human.
Showing off her script Muteki No Hito through a VR experience, No Longer Human is officially now the first Japanese screenwriter in XR. But this is far from her first time innovating.
A musical beginning
Getting her start in 2013, Human directed music videos for some of Japan’s biggest music stars. Her directorial filmography includes videos for Punpee, Gingnang Boyz, and Brats, among others. Brats’ lead member Kuromiya Rei is actually a frequent collaborator of Human’s.
Changing from music to film
Naturally, after spending time directing behind the camera, Human was ready for a change and wanted to tell stories in a new way. After taking a break from music videos, she broke into the film industry through her first film Dream Machine in 2015. With high praise from festival judges, Human was going in the right direction with her work.
But story isn’t just a visual medium. If the writing isn’t there, the story doesn’t work. So naturally, Human’s next big challenge was a foray into writing. Standing out is just as important though, so Human turned her script into a new creative challenge.
XR Storytelling
With so many ways to program XR content these days, Human found it easy to tell the story she wanted to tell. Writing a script around the end of the Heisei era in Japan and the death of “Kobi” or fascination, bringing pain and suffering to the people was the idea that came to mind.
Her script Muteki No Hito works to tell this story in an interactive format, so people can truly see what she means. Writers work to help tell a story on the written page, but by becoming the first XR writer in Japan, Human took storytelling to new heights. It’ll be awhile before anyone tops this.
